so i pull into a parking spot, turn the key off and pull it out and the motor is still running. so i taped the starter once and pulled the key back out and it stalled it or it died, i couldnt tell then i was sitting at a light for like 10 mins and she stalled out. so i put it in N and restarted it but when i let off the key the starter kept winding up. i was frantically jiggling the key on and off and eventually it stopped winding up this is my 250/C4 comet btw
IIRC that is a common problem. I think a search will pull up some results on that. I (knock on wood) have never had it happen but seem to remember some others having that problem. Is this in your Comet or did you get that 302 in the MAverick? (nevermind I didn't read the last line) hahaha
I think this is the thread I was thinking of http://mmb.maverick.to/showthread.php?t=41401&highlight=starter+run&page=2 but after re-readin it I betcha yours is something in your keyswitch that is sticking. try spraying a tiny bit of WD-40 in the key switch or spray a little white silicone grease on the key it's self and put ing in and out of the switch and wiggle it back and forth. You also may want to check the solenoid and the wires going to it for corrosion, or overheating marks
ok. ive been having starter problems anyway. just replaced it last week as a matter of fact. the starter sometimes wouldnt engage the pinion gear to the flywheel. it would just spin. the starter i put on the comet was intended for the 302 in the mav so ive got to get one of those now too lol
Seems like the ignition switch(lock cyl) may be hangin up in the start position when you turn the key.Or the actuator rod in the column is hangin up,OR the ignition switch itself on the column(the electrical component)may be getting worn out.
I had the same problem. solenoid common problem. something just gives and sticks. Here's thread when it happened to me. http://mmb.maverick.to/showthread.php?t=16835
Sounds like the solenoid to me too. If it sticks and keeps winding the starter while the key is in your hand (I hate when that happens ... :16suspect), you can pull the small wires off the solenoid to get it to stop. I had use a chisel to remove a starter from my Torino once ... it kind of welded itself in there a bit.
I would bet it's selonoid as well. I've went through three new selonoids on my 86 SVO before I finally got one that was good.
