I have my AOD hooked to the column. You should do a search on AOD's and you'll find all the info you need, there may even be a tech write up about doing the swap...

The way fuel prices are, my 2 cents would be to use 3.00 gears.
These cars came with 2.79s or 3.00s. 2.79s $uck pretty bad.
3.00s are liveable unless you are running a moderate to wild cam... if that's the case though, you likely aren't worried about mileage. So then 3.55s are awesome.

If I went AOD and was concerned about mileage, then maybe 3.25s or 3.40s.

Don't get me wrong, look at my handle...;) I like gears, but you are using words like "economy" and "mileage". So my .02 is 3.00 gears.

Yeah I was thinking the same thing. I certainly believe 71gold and what he says. I have a 4 speed and 3:00 gears and I honestly don't think my RPM's would be that low at that speed.

I am running about 1800 RPM's @ 55MPH according to my tach and giving the fact that my speedo is off by 10MPH.

If all goes well with the Powertrax locker this year I may go with some 3.25:1 or maybe even 3.55 next year.

OH and BTW with the 4 speed and 3.00 rear, pretty much stock 302 witha mild cam and an Eldebrock 4bbl and duals I am getting right around 19MPG

I like plenty of gear, but honestly, a wide ratio toploader with 3.00 gears and 26" tires wasn't bad at all.
With a C4, the first gear final drive ratio is 7.2:1, IIRC...
The WR toploader brings first gear in at 8.4:1, which isn't bad at all.
A C4 would need 3.55 gears to have the same first gear final drive ratio.
Then in the last gear, you still got 3.55s, while the WR toploader has 3.00s.

If you have a 3+OD toploader from a Granada, you end up even better off!
But that is really an economy setup IMO. The ratios are too wide for performance use, again my opinion.

    That's awesome!

I got right at 20 highway with my 302, Edelbrock 600, and Edelbrock Performer Plus cam, P heads, 3.80 gears and 26" tires. That was cruising highway at 65mph. But if I put my foot into it, I could burn a gallon per mile.

Haven't figured out my current gas mileage, probably much worse with the double pumper.

Just alittle imfo I've collected from a Tech I found: 25" tires @ 60 mph from stock 302/ 3:55 = 3101 rpm, 3:08 = 2683 rpm, 2:73 = 2385 rpm. Same setup AOD dropped 800 rpm @ 60 mph.from 355's. Speedo gear = 3 mph per tooth / standard gear is 17-19 tooth. ex. speedo says faster than accual, go smaller gear. Hope this helps somebody (it did ME!) OH! stock # on Stanless Lokar KickDown cable is KD-20C4HT Works GREAT!!!

someone has probably already answered this question on this tread but i cant find it, if i kept the c4 in it till i could get the proper items to get the aod in, what gears would be ok for it? right now with my I6 200 it seems to rev too high on the hwy. also what would be good for the aod with out using too much gas? what cars will i find each of these? im thinking of using the 3.00 that is probably already in my car with the aod but i dont think it will work with the 302
