Yesterday I managed to finally fit a pair of Cooper Cobra 295/50/15's under the Comet. pics are here: http://s125.photobucket.com/albums/p53/baddad457/ They rubbed slightly with the utility trailer behind on the way home from the tire store. So when I got home, I jacked her up, removed the wheels and tires (wheels are Wheel Vintiques 15x10 series 35 for Chevy trucks with a 5 inch backspace and a dual bolt pattern, 5 x 4.5 & 5 x 4.75) then removed the chrome trim from the wheel wells and rolled the fender lips up. I also for insurance added a set of helper springs I had bought for my 89 Ranger (but never used) These lifted the rear about an inch or so. Someday I'll buy new rear springs for it (if I think about it:16suspect) The rearend is a narrowed 9" that's about an inch wider than the old 8" that came with the car.
Looks good As much as I like 50s series, I like em in 14s better, but that's me. What are you running up front?
Wow! We should start a 295 club! I have been running 295/50/15's for about 4 years now and have no trouble at all with rubbing even with a full load(Slicks in back seat, tools, spare fuel, jack etc)...although I did roll my quarters also! I have about an inch to spare before the tires hit the spring...how much do you have? Mine have a 4.5in offset!
Fronts are the stock wheels (14's) with I think 215 or 205 70's. I plan to change these to 15's later, but am torn between using 6's or 8's up front. I have a pair of Mopar 15x8 Cop car wheels that match the Chevy truck wheels (both are 5 slot steel wheels) and would like to use them, only it's tough to get a short enough tire for that width and look OK. On the other hand the truck wheels only come in 7" at the narrowest, so that's not much difference.
I only had about an inch clearance before I installed the helper springs. I might just remove them an see if they do rub. On the other hand the helpers remove the rear spring sag...............which levels the car. Maybe I'll just remove the helpers and cut a coil off the fronts................idea:
