    what kind of rear is this first 1 is out 1972 2 1 is out 1970 thanks guys:tiphat:

    1st one looks like a 8" and the other one a 7.5

    which is better 1 one has not much power 2 one has $hit load of power :burnout:

    The 8 inch(#1) will take more power than the the 7.5.Lots of guys putting 300+ horse through them.The 7.5,dont bother with it.Pete.

    The 8 inch is stronger simply by virtue of its designe not to mention there arent many if any options for hopping up the dinky 7.5 lets not talk about the tiny bearings and teenie weenie pinion.The 7.5 is meant for 6 bangers not v-8's the 8" will live behind a healthy v-8 on the street the 7.5 you will break in short order if you bang on it.Think of it this way the 8" is a baby 9" the 7.5 is ...well... just a baby.Hope this helps you Chris.

    8" arent rare in Mavs/comets.9" is better but they are more rare.Especially in a size that fits a maverick/comet.Some granadas have em.Lincoln Versilles and some 50's fords.If you have an 8" you can build it to be comparable to the 9" but they wont take the same amount of high torque abuse a 9" will with out splitting the carrier bearing caps.(this happens when you go over 400 horse and use slicks on a regular basis.For street duty the 8 will live a long happy life.Just remeber if you go looking for one,get a 5 lug one not a 4 lug.The 4 lug 8" has smaller tubes and axle bearings and you cant put 5 lug axles in em without some welding.(gotta put the larger bearing ends on the tubes to do it)Are you feeling better???     the 9'' is stronger but IMO its really not worth the money (or extra weight)unless you plan on pumping some serious power thru it. tho aftermarket parts, traclocs and gears are alot more common for a 9''

    fount this down in the woods at my house on a old maverick, could not get good pictures. i dont know what this means but it said 9/92, wanted to see if you guys could tell if it is a 8 or 9 inch, maybe i could swap it out for mine. How hard is it to remove the rear without cutting brake lines, is it just some bolts to remove?

    Looks like an 8 inch. 9/92 was probably the date when it was serviced.

    Thats an 8" kash. As far as removal from that doner car is concerned.
    Jack it up so you can get under it.Support it REALLY WELL with jack stands.
    1.) Pull drive shaft(Keep it)
    2.)Cut brake hose (or line to keep hose in tact)You will need a new one(DK how good that one is)
    3.)Cut E-brake cables(unless they are good)If so keep em.
    4.)Remove U-Bolt nuts holding axle to springs on both sides.
    now "sometimes" there is enough room to get the axle out with out un bolting the springs.(lift/Shove it past the spring) Repeat to get it past other spring.This is alot of bull work though.That said,Unbolt the springs from the frame at the front spring eye.(these usually come out easier than the shackle bolts)Or if you have a cordless sawzall you can cut the shackles and drop the rear axle out that way.OR you can unbolt the springs all the way around cut the cables/pop the brake hose,pull the drive shaft and rear end out the back of the car as a unit.Its a bit clumsy to move around with the springs attached to it though.(not to mention the drive shaft)Good luck.

    Looks like an 8" rear. Easiest way to tell is the bottom two nuts that hold the center section in. If you can fit a ratchet and socket onto these, it's an 8'. If you can only get a box end wrench on em, it's a 9"

    yanking the rear out was no problem jacked that bitch up and threw some wheels under the back end and cut it slam out, took a total of 20 mins. tops. as far as driveshaft goes there was none in it. could i use my driveshaft or will that not work at all? after i cut the rear out i jacked the car down opened up the door because something was sticking threw the floor when i jacked it up, it was a rear looked like the 7 1/2 inch, and three transmissions. i asked my mom about the car sitting in the woods and she said the rear that was inside the car came out of it, it locked up when grandad was driving it. one of the trannys has a couple of gears missing she cannot remember which ones, and the other two are good. so if you know any one who needs a tranny let me know it cannot be no use to me. my brother can make them sweet to race car standards or regular use i can ask for a price on how much if you know anyone interested. they are all c4 manual transmissions. i am going to go outside and check this rear with a socket wrench, you said if a socket fits then its not a 9, if one does its a eight. theres like 3 bolts across the bottom i took some pictures now that it is out let me know what you think. thanks guys:yahoo:
