I thought I'd check Ebay for an X-pipe, since they are $189 new from Dr. Gas (2 1/2" x 2 1/2"). I ws surprised at the number of different ones offered, and how much less costly they were than the name brand ones. Having always been taught that you get what you pay for, these cheaper alternatives set off some alarms in my head. Anyone have experience with with X-pipes of one brand or another? Thanks. John B.

I made mine for less than $10. Easy if you have a torch or mig.

    I bought mine here:

They are designed to improve on the idea of a
    'crossover' or 'H- Pipe'.
H-Pipes are a straight pipe between your dual exhaust
    pipes (90 degree angles).

The idea of both is to balance the exhaust pulse
on the cylinder banks to assist in scavenging- ie.
    getting the spent gas out.
The X-Pipe improves on the process by eliminating
the resistance of the right angles. It also gives your
exhaust tone a bit more of a snarl.

I think all of this is right. It's the way it has been
explained to me over the years.

The X configuration tends to improve performance at a higher RPM than an H config.
The X tends to reduce exhaust levels by the more direct cross interference and changes the sound to a nontraditional buzz or humm type sound at RPM.
The X config also give each bank access to both sides of the muffler system, reducing flow losses. This tends to be where the gains come from in addition to the pressure pulse changes to each bank.

1974 Maverick I bought for $500 8 years ago when I was 16. Since then I have invested $30,000 into it.
I went heddman headers (black painted). 2 1/2 w/ X-pipe and raven 30 series mufflers. When I went to the X-pipe I noticed alot of things changed. The tone was the first. It went from a loud rumpety camed sound to a well worked fuel injection engine. What I mean by that is it sounds a little mellower but accurate, clean sound. I pull in to car shows and the first thing people say is the exhaust sounds amazing. The best is when you get on it. It Growls, totaly different than the straight pipes almost scary.

Does anyone have pictures of the heddman elite headers on their car. I wanted to see how they look b4 I buy them from Autokrafters. Can you ding the elite headers for fitting purposes or no? Mine I had to ding and make a bracket to keep the powers steering assembly. Actually my dad did this not me. Thanx eveyone in advance for help, Thom

74 Mav. I'm sorry, I cannot honestly answer your questions. You see, I did the 6/8 cyl. swap. It was all new when the swap was made. I have nothing to compare it too. But it seems to breath good and sounds nice.
