Wellthe 5.0 from 90 mustang that I was going to buy went bust The guys went to deliver and decided to turn it over before bringing it to me, and well it ws froze. So I went back to Craigsdlist Desmoines and a guy who had a 77 Fairmont 302 and 79 Mustang 302 is back out there with more info. Some of you guys may remember I had asked about these 2 motors before the warnings i got was were to make sure they are not 255's He posted picts and a website to decode the enigines, seems the numbers match up for a 302?? anyway, My question if a 255 is a 302 block would the stamping be the same as a 302? Guys I am posting the Craigs list link here only for the purpose of you guys seeing the info, do you think I'd be safe with one of these motors being a 302? he says the both turn over. Price is $125 Here's the link http://desmoines.craigslist.org/pts/593579376.html
A 255 is not a 302 block. It just looks like it. You can't build a 302 with a 255 block. I am 98% sure that neither of those engines are 255's.
Thanks Jamie, If a motor will turn over ( by hand) is that a pretty good indicator that it is a runner?
ALso would a 77 Fairmont 302 , or the 79 Mustang 302 engine have had a c-4's if they were automatics, and would the flexplates be the same as my 250?
Score!!! 20 302's 1and these are my choice both out of 85 Marquis,Complete motors and can hear both run!!! He'll pull them and the electronics too I just need to tell him what to pull and where it is at, he seems to not know much about the electronics !!This is a great opportunity as He'll get me the stuff I need and it is all for $150!!
Well, that means it can run. Of course that dosen't mean the timing chain hasn't jumped a tooth, dosen't have any cam/valve train problems, worn rings, leaky/blown seals or gaskets, stuff like that. If you are planning to run either with out rebuilding them, at the very least I would tear it down to a short block and check the bearings and everything and put new main seals and heads gaskets and stuff like that in. I'm not well enough versed in either of those cars to know what automatic transmission they may have had. If they did have C4's, then I believe the only difference between the flex plates would be your 250 is 0 balance while those are 28. I don't know what the difference would be in torque converters either. The only thing I can tell you for sure there, is that your 250 flex plate WILL bolt up to the 302. But of course that dosen't mean you can use it. Sorry, I am doing the best I can here with my limited knowledge of the specifics of those cars.
Whoops, you posted again while I was writing the last reply! I'm always more comfortable with an engine I can hear run first.
Anyone any Ideas what electronics I should have this guy pull for me? 84 and 89 Grand Marquis 302 are those both fuel injection? heck if I can get all the electrics off this guy, I can retian Fule injection on the very cheap, he' s talking about pulling what I need for the same price! He's making Demo Derby cars out of these cars so doesn't need any of it!
Just buy the motor, don't worry about the electronics, you'll be better off with a 4 barrel carb anyways. I can't remember the years, but some of those cars had those variable venturi carbs on them.
Go with the 89 for sure, like Frank said it will be a roller engine. If you want to do EFI, I don't think I would mess with the factory stuff out of that car. I would go with a Mustang ECU and harness and HO firing order. Or you can just slap a carb on it and Duraspark distributor (not sure about the cam gear??) and run it as is.
