Tums out the T-bird was sold already, i am looking hard at 302 out of a 79 Mustang, my understanding is a rear sum[p is all I need there too, is that correct? will the C-4 bolt up without modification ( if I take it easy until I get the Tranny beefed up? )
I see the front sump pan on Summit, but where can I find the actual sump. what is a windage tray is that something I would need too ?
"Yes you do need a front sump pan I got one of the 302 motors and tranny out of a 87 T-bird and it had a rear sump pan. Fortunitely the changeover is easy just make sure when you do it you get the one peice oil pan gasket it is alot easier then the cork gaskets." I see on Summit's website they have a fornt sump pan, an oil pump, is that the actual sump ? or is there something elese I need there, Also I see a one piece gasket but it lists newer ( mid 80's model 302s ) Is that the one I woudl get for a 79? wht is the difference is it becaseu the mid eighties have rear sumps? Can someone straighten me out on this if I were to buy the 79 'stang motor what parts do i need to buy to siwtch top a front sump pan etc. Keep in mind I'm not real sutre on what the difference between a sump and the oil pump etc is, I've never done this kind of work but as it looks I'd buy a motor then slowly put it together basically stock, then get all the Mav pieces needed, then have someone drop it in for me,
I'd just be sure it's actually a 302 and not a POS 255. I don't remember exactly what years the 255 were used, but it was in Mustangs right there around '79-'80 some time.
Well heres a partial parts list I compiled (found more info) tell me what you guys think Turns out the 79 Mustang 302 is complete except carb This is summit's parts list front sump pan SPE-5489 oil Pickup ? MEL-68-S Oil Pump MEL-M68 Rubber and metal 1 piece gasket FEL-OS34508R Holley Carb 4 barrel ( will this bolt to the stock intake? if it was a 2 bbl )4160 Holley Carb HLY-0-80457S What ignition set up would I use with the stock Distributor? What would I need ? Fuel pump? I am thinking about taking a chance on the Mustang engine ( How do I tell it is a 302 Jamie? and not the 255? He's had it 2 years and I'm thinking I can get it for less than $100
Go for the T'Bird 5.0, although it's got a small cam, it IS a roller cammed motor. All you'll need to do is swap to a front sump pan. The dual sump on it comes in handy for V8 Ranger swaps.

Downside of it is it's likely got the crappy E6SE heads and no valve reliefs on the piston tops. If you rebuild it, that can be changed.
He said the T-Bird is out of the picture now (already sold). I honestly have no idea how to tell the difference between a 255 and 302, but according to Wikipedia, you should be in the clear there as it looks like they were used from '80-'82 only.
If it is a 255, you can tell by removing the intake. The 255's intake ports are oval shaped. You'll need a 4 bbl intake for a 4 bbl carb. You'll want one of the following: Edelbrock RPM, RPM airgap, Their older F4B, Ford's current A321, Weiand Stealth. These will work on stock to hot 5.0's, regardless of what the advertising says. Felpro lists 2 different one pc oilpan gaskets, one for the front sump pans, one for the later motors with the fox body dual sump pans. If you have Duraspark now in your car, all you need is a reman 302/5.0 Duraspark distributor.
Good news the 79 Stang motor has a front sump pan, I think I am gonna buy it, they both had 2bbl carbs so I might buy an intake carb combo, any suggestions? I know I don't want a manual choke, I am going for a budget set up to start off, is there a combo that could be still be used with a mild 302 but as i progress keep up with power adding things like headers, cam etc, What kind of hp could I expect from a stock 302 with just a 4 bbl and new intake, can I keep the stock cam and valve train set up for now? assuming I go with headers and dual exaust , I'm getting into this fresh as I have always thought in terms of modding the 6. but heck $100 for a used 302 is a far car form rebuilding my 6 and still haveing under 100hp.
A Duraspark II distributor, wiring harness, ignition module and I'd just grab like an MSD coil or something. I made my own harness, very easy and you can make it to fit how you want it to. There are only three wires to the distributor and one to the coil, and they are color coded (Orange, Black and Purple to the distributor and Green to the coil), so all you have to do is match up the colors. You can either cut the factory ends off a harness from a Duraspark car to use as the ends of your harness, or you can do like I did and just use the push on connectors. The red wire coming out of the module goes to a switched 12V power source. The white is to retard the timing when cranking the engine over, and is optional. Your factory power wire to the coil is probably not 12V, so you will need to get a switched 12V power source to run the coil and ignition module on.
