I am piecing a 1974 302 engine together. It has no power steering or a/c. So far I have found the crank, water pump and alternator pulleys and the proper alternator mounting brackets and hardware. It uses two v-belts. The first belt goes from the crank to the alternator and is also tesioned by the alternator. The second belt goes from the crank ro the water pump/fan, but I hve no way yet to tension it. Can anybody tell me if if there is a proper tensioning pulley/bracket assembly that I am missing. If any of you out ther have a 302 without a/c or power steering I would appreciate any input you could offer i/e photos, part numbers or descriptions. PS I am also looking for the passenger side style timing pointer. thanks
You have a one belt car. The second belt may have gone to a smog pump. But your pulleys should line up to your alternator, water pump and crank pulley for a one belt system. Dan
How is it supposed to be put together because we can only get the crank pulley to line up with only one belt at a time, do you know which alternator spacer or crank pulley we need
on every ford I have seen the alts have a rediculous spacer washer. Are you missing it? Your water pump and all should line up with eachother.
Use the spacer to get the alternator to line up with the crank and waterpump pulley. If you would rather you could see if a double pulley on the alternator would work - I think it has to be spaced farther than that but my memory isn't real reliable all the time.
If I put a different alt. spacer in, then the alt. mount brackets won't go on properly. I an pretty sure it is supposed to have two pulleys. If it had one, either it would be the inner of the 2 groove crank pulley i have which currently lines up with water pum but the alt. doesn't line up and the brackets keep me from changing the spacer, or i could use the other groove on the crank pulley which lines up with alt. but requires a water pump pulley about 1 1/4 inch deep. Isn't there a way to tension a belt that goes from crank to water pump without using a power steering pump?
Does anyone have there car set up with a later style motor (1971-when they changed to serpentine belt) and could they describe with part. #, pictures, or descriptions of how it is set up. I also believe i have an earlier timing chain cover, but am not sure. Do different timing chain covers have different hieghts and pull the water pump in more?
Sorrry i meant push the water pump out more because it is to short to line up with the alt. and crank
Ford used 5 different lengths of damper/lower pully combinations on small blocks. You can add some shims between the water pump and the pulley.
On the motors set up this way you're talking about, are these early motors with a right side water pump outlet or later with the other side outlet because i have a later motor. Also where is your atl. mounting, onto the corner of the head or onto a bracket on the water pumo.
The water pump inlet is on the driver's side. The alternator has 2 brackets that bolt to the water pump and a long bolt w/spacer that bolts to the head. In mine, the crank pulley has 2 sections for belts but only the rear one is used.
It is likely a replacement alternator with a dual groove pulley. (allowed the unit to fit more applications with a single part number) You will only use one groove.
