Can anyone give me a relativly simple way to readjust my roller rockers without running the motoer? I know it can be done, just don't know the how tos.
Do you mean as far as turning the crank? I have a handheld remote starter trigger that I use to get the valves in the right position. Remove the coil wire to keep the engine from starting. You can buy 'em at AutoZone or your local auto parts store.
Just roll the motor over with a ratchet on the crank. You might want to pull the plugs to make it easier as the compression will make it turn hard. Just turn the motor over with the ratchet and watch 1 set of rockers at a time. By set - I mean the intake and exhaust valve for 1 cylinder. When the exhaust just starts to move - adjust the intake. When the intake goes through it's cycle and just stops moving - adjust the exhaust. This way, you will know the lifter is on the base circle of the cam. I've used this method on all of my motors (up to 292 degree hydraulics). I do not know if it will work this same way on really radical race cams or not because there is so much overlap in those cams. For those you probably need a dial indicator to know when the lifter is on the base circle. Cleaver
I know you said you didn't want to do it with the motor running, but i have actually noticed a seat-of-the-pants difference by adjusting it that way. Just take a stock valve-cover and drill a couple of holes in it. Just a thought....
What I ment was: You have to tighten them down how much? I know you tighten them down some once their in the closed position and then back off what 1/4 turn? A mechanich told me about two years ago and I've forgotten what he said, how he normally did it.
Sorry, but you were misinformed I believe. I always load the push rod until I feel resistance, back off just slightly enough to be able to rotate the rod, then TIGHTEN 1/2 turn. See more information on "Engine Off" valve adjusting at http://www.centuryperformance.com/valveadjustment.asp
