I have a 73 maverick and was wondering if a 65 - 66 mustang rear end is a bolt in or if mods have to be made ???

Got this part bass-ackwards, :D All the Versailles had 9's but they were optional in the Granada and Monarch. Most of these have 8's

and 65-68 mustang rears are a bolt in, but be aware that MOST of them are 8" as well. very few were ever 9" from the factory in mustangs...

Thanks for all your help. I'm sure that I will be looking for more parts and asking allot more questions.. the rear end that I'm getting is from a 65 mustang and that's good that there's no mods needed because I'm doing the swap in the garage..

from what ive read only the hi-po 289 k-code 65-66's had a 9''. make sure you know what your getting either way. a 8'' and a 9'' can look very simular to the untrained eye

I have a 9" from a Mustang in My Maverick. Wheels stick out a little but that could probably be fixed with different backspacing on the wheels.:)

9" rears from 65-66 were made from 8" rears!
    Just trivia...

The 65-66 Stangs have the same width rears as the early Fords and the Granada/Monarchs. They are only very slightly wider than a Maverick 8".

The 67-70 Stangs are wider still, but bolt right in and work fine with the proper offset rims.

71-73 Stangs will also bolt right in, but need a huge backspace rim... around 6.5" or 7" IIRC. Perfect for late model Stang rims!

The HiPo and Shelby 9" rears were made by putting 8" tubes and axles into a 9" housing center with a 28 spline chunk. You can do this on the cheap with your stock 8" rear and have a perfect bolt in 9" on the cheap.
