I bought a set of used sport mirrors (often also called racing mirrors) to install on the yellow Maverick. Unfortunately they were sold as "great condition" but the right hand mirror "insides" were messed up, so much so that once I took them apart to paint, I found the inside filled with silicone chalk. This was no doubt to help hold the position of the mirror, which is the current problem. I was wondering, does anybody know if any of the re-pop dealers sell new "insides only", and if so, would they fit an original mirror? Or, does anybody have a damaged RH mirror that has good internal workings they would like to sell. I already spent a good deal of $ when I bought this set and I hate to have to buy another whole mirror only to fix the problem of the internal mechanism. Any help you can offer would be appreciated.

    Thanks!

What is wrong "internally"? It is the mirror.....or is it the bullet part where it mounts to the base?

    Craig,

It's the bullet part where it mounts to the base. I monkeyed with it to try and get it tighter, but the mirror still won't hold it's position since I've put it on the car.

I would take it apart and check out the hardware....maybe the screws are stripped out??

Tae it apart and report back.

    Craig,

I removed the mirror last night and shot a photo. It seems like the the adjustment ball is too loose and I can't see a way to correct that. Can anything be done?

So it is not "the bullet part where it mounts to the base"...but the actual mirror itself. The only thing you can probably do is to replace the mirror part. Not sure if any Mustang places sell this part.

Has anybody had any success in repairing these things? Is there some way to tighten up the ball/socket?

Al; I have a sport mirror that loosens up. There is a set screw on the side of the mechanism. You can reach it with a small screwdriver. Mine loosens up, even with locktite. See if that helps.

    Earl,

Thanks for the tip, however, mine is not loose due to the mounting screw, it's the ball being too loose in the socket that's the problem (see photo above). Loose is a strong word, it's not wobbling, but just loose enough that movement and vibration from driving the car (as well as opening and closing the door) makes the mirror move from where it was set. Just wondering if there is a fix for it, or if not, is there a replacement part available?

    Thanks....

See if you can buy a compression spring (one that wants to "push out") at the hardware store that can be "wedged" between the bracket and the mirror housing. You might have to drill a small hole on the bracket and screw a sheet metal screw or machine screw through it and into the center of the spring to keep it from slipping out but it should provide (if you get the right tensioned spring) enough force to hold the ball against the socket.
