Howdy! New guy here About 15 years ago I had a 71, 2 dr Mav with the 200, black interior, buckets, auto....not bad at all....I really enjoyed that car. Then I saw a 71 AMC Jav SST and well...you must understand ..right?...well its been a while and a few more rods since then and I'm looking to get back in to owning an older 'FIXABLE' ride...I say its worth paying more for fule than pay car payments and run the risk of repair shop nightmares that NO ONE can afford! I want to save money and not spend a lot on a used older car....and I know that the mavericks or the Hueys and B-17's of the auto world. I'm looking for a depenable daily driver to get out of my first and LAST financed mistake....don't ask but its all there in my intro on the new folks section. I'm looking at a straight clean 78 Mav in good running shape, yellow, auto, 600 I6. Havn't seen it yet in person and I'm curious before I waste anytime. When I open the hood on a 78 with a 600....is it still pretty simple and bare like a 71? or is there more emisions and electrical? Would it still be a 1 barrel carb? AND here is the big question....what can the average MPG be on a ride like this? I know that depends on tupe up, condition of the carb etc etc. Anyone want a 98 Red Firebird with 97350 miles? Thanks!
:Handshake check the vin. on this car...post a pic. of this '78 600. i have never seen one up close. ...frank...
Welcome aboard! Yes, please post pix's of this 78-600 Maverick I too have never seen one. If you can I'd love to see some of your other rods as well.
I know what yer thinking and I was going to add the link to the add...but you never know who might be in the pacific north west area and could snatch and grab?...real fast like...dig? I looked around on the net after posting here and found the years in the states to be 70 to 77 only.....hmmmmm Could this be a case where the production was so late that the vin or door plate says 78? .....I have had cars that say 70 on the door but are 71 models. Here are some pics. I have not even called the guy yet because I wanted to know what I'm getting into 'roughly' OK....Back to my original question. Give the the MPG stats on a 77. Sorry no pics of my past loves ...too far back for digi camera times and my last two the RS and the 67 Coug...well the 67 Coug was a very sad thing....found it..it was a steel at 2,000...some punk kid had NO IDEA what he had...needed some carb work, new rear window, ( I repaired the turn signal sequencers )...but straight and clean black interior, original 289, 2 blr etc etc.....got it on the road in two weeks....digging it in a huge way cuz my 1st ride was a 68 Coug. Only after two weeks on the road... on the way home from work some young kid slamed into my side right behind the drivers door....trashed my car...I was at the hospital for two days...don't remember the day before, that day and most of that following week. I only had liability on it so recovery wasn't so great and the $ that I did recieve went for some medical and personal bills...then I was in a POS for a while till I financed my 98 F body. I had some digi pics of the 67 Coug but I wiped them all off the pc....to painful. The Camaro's pics are on a 3 1/2 floppy and I gotta dig through some piles of those old things to find it. Here is the 78?
YIKES!! Did I say 600....HOLY COW!!!! 200 ...is that moore like it? I should know my 71 Mav had the 200...dang good engine too.
It will probably have a bunch of EGR and smog junk, but it will work just fine after you pull it all off and deposit it into the garbage... The car in your pics looks like a good starter car. Is the underbody as rust-free as what we see in the rest of the body in the pics? Look for rusty floor pans, signs of rusted cowl. Not sure on the mpg, but I would guess 20-24...
I have not seen it yet...maybe tomorrow on Sat. I bet it's a 77...unless by an odd chance like I said above it could be a last run and left the factory after Dec 77? its happen'd before on other cars. 600.....thats still cracking me up. I may just not jump the gun here....I like the 70 - 71 much better. Heck..20 - 24 MPG isn't that much different than my 98 Firebird even with the V6!....could even be better?....I have never set the meter and done the math.
