I have a question about timing covers. (two part question) I have a 68 block that i recently rebuilt, and before I did I idiotically (sp) broke the timing cover. So I went to the JY and pulled a nice one off a 90's bronco. My questions are: 1. Can I use that cover with a standart rotation water pump, provided the cover will bout up to my engine? 2. Can I use the nifty double roller timing gears that I pulled from that bronco as well? Thanks
Ed not really up to speed on the Bronco 302 but does it have the dip stick tube in the timing cover and does it have a place for fuel pump to bolt on. I have done the opposite and bolted old style timing cover to newer block so it will bolt on and water pump rotation is not an issue, my guess is the timing chain will not work though something to do with thickness of cam gear. I am sure some of the pros will chime in on this one soon.
Jegs has a nice new timing cover http://www.jegs.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_10001_10002_91074_-1 I use this on the 331 I helped do for my brothers 73' Personally it fit fine but was bulky. I ground a little bit down so I could get to the t-Stat housing bolts easier This one seemd less bulky and is Edelbrock made in the USA http://www.jegs.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_10001_10002_128862_-1 These will work on either or......
I drilled out the dipstick in this one. I was not meant for it, but did have to boss on the cover to drill through. Also the fuel pump eccentric is not there, which is cool since i'm gonna run and electric fuel pump. I hope the timing gears will work though, they do fit on the cam and crank. I read on Ford Muscle that as long as I get the correct std, rotation water pump everything will work and not leak. but I'm still out to jury
Arent those 90s' broncos roller motors??? if so the gears wont work without the thrust plate from the roller motor. If it isnt a roller motor(bronco) you should be golden as long as the chain isnt worn out.
i plan on buyin a new chain, and I pulled the thrust plate off that engine too. And it was an f-150 not a bronco, my mistake. so all good??
I was buying just a chain, Autozone has the replacement chain for 11.99 If using the double roller set from the F-150, if it was not going to work wouldn;t I notice something? Like it not fitting, rubbing, etc... will there be some sort of visual or physical indication? Thanks guys
The chain will work just fine , I`ve been running the same timing chain for years with no problems. The only bad thing is I think the factory dual roller timming chain sets the cam timming back 4* vs an aftermarket timing chain set ?
You can get a 3 keyway double roller timing chain for around $25 bucks IIRC and you can adjust your cam accordingly with it. Advance Auto Part Number: 9163 Clevite Double Roller timing chain 23.99 This part is listed for a 95 F-150 with a 302 and a 73 Ford Maverick with a 302 So either cover you have should work.
