My Blue Holley fuel pump has a slight leak. I tightened the bolts on the cover plate and that slowed it down some, but not completely, so I guess the gasket is dried out. Before I take the cover off to replace the gasket, is there any springs or anything that will fall out that I need to watch for? It is mounted with the cover facing down, so if there is, it will fall out....I just don't want any sudden surprizes....
I cant help with your question but I have one. Do you have fuel injection? Just wondering and I am probobly incorrect, but I understand red for carbs and blue for FI.
Nope, carb. Blue is just a higher pressure pump. Have to run a regulator with the blue, red you don't. I didn't really need a blue pump, it was just a good eBay deal...$15+ $15 for the regulator....
Actually there are no springs, but the rotor and the 'blades' that fit into the rotor may come out. It depends on how worn it is. I've had them so tight that they had to be pried out and other ones just fell out. Keep in mind that when you take that plate off there is nothing stopping the fuel from draining out and onto the ground. Especially if you have a full tank or your pump is lower than the fuel level. Be careful and keep sparks (i.e.-trouble lights and electrical extensions) away from the leaking fuel. If it were me, I'd be inclined to remove the pump and do the rebuild on the bench.
Oh I forgot too, there is also a wear plate about the size of a quarter that could fall out also but it usually sticks to the gasket.
I had a brand new summit pump, same as the holley blue, and it leaked like a seive from day one, and is loud, very loud, I got tired of trying to make it work and got a mallory 70gal/minute, works like a dream, don't even know it's there
Mine is right beside the tank, above the bottom of the fuel level slightly. I may just go ahead and take it back off, figured I'd give it a shot on the car first.
I'm now of the opinion that you move it as far back as possible, put rubber insulators all over it and put a loud exhaust, gear drive, and a gilmer belt supercharger on it...then you won't hear the pump any more! Of course you won't hear it any less...but it will get drowned out by everything else!
Mine is silent...after doing this... The metal brackets drop it down lower so it picks up better, and there are rubber grommets on both sides of it so it doesn't vibrate my frame, or even through the bolts. Looks kinda crappy from this angle, but you cannot see it without crawling under the car.
Dennis, you could could have listened to it @ carlisle, barely hear it when the engines off, just a slight buzz, I didin't think it was working @ first
we'll see, I enjoy the ride to shows more than the shows them selves. It is a nice 2.5hr drive out there, and I should have my 8.8 posi rear and 3.73s in this winter, not sure if I'll go into the show though
