D0AE would be a 1970 Galaxie number. That dosen't, however, mean that the engine is originally from a Galaxie, or even a 1970 model year car at all.

Would this be a 302 casting though?

I am 80% sure that "D3C" means it is a 302 block. If you could post pictures of it, we could tell you for sure (or someone may know what they are talking about more then I do, which is pretty common. :rofl2: )

It's a 302 that would be correct in any car from 70 to about 72.

Why do you think it would be anything other than a 302 casting, out of curiousity?

This motor is out of the '73 parts car Tim Keck came to pick up yesterday,
not my '71 which still has its original 302 in it. The documnets that came
with the car led me to believe it was not the same motor that came in it
from the factory. What is a good site for pulling casting numbers from blocks and head? Thanks for the help guys.

D0AE sounds like a Cleveland block. Look at the front, does it have a sunk-in area in front for the timing set ? Two vertical bolts for the fuel pump ? T-Stat housing bolted to the top of the block just forward of the intake?

    It's not a 351C,I saw it yesterday and it's a 302.D0 cast # says it's a '70 block(at least that's when it was CAST)

That dosen't even mean that's when it was cast. You'd have to look for the casting date to find that, which is usually formatted in a format such as "1K26" or similar, and will have what appear to be the heads of two screws cast in on either side. The 200 in my '72 has a C8 number on the block, but the block wasn't physically cast until October of 1970.

D0AE can be on a number of different engines, not just a Cleveland.

And FWIW, if the engine is a 302, there should be a date stamped in of when it was physically assembled also. This date will be located at the base of the left side cylinder head, and will be formatted the same way as the cast date, except it will be stamped in.

Here is a picture posted on another thread recently that perfectly shows where this "build date" is:

If the deck surface of the block has been machined over the years, this number might be gone. You can just barely make out the numbers in that picture.

Ok,so what exactly does the cast # mean?I have heard about the date casting and don't argue that.I also know that most 460s from 71-78 have either a D1ve or D3ve cast # regardless or what they came in so it is possible to have a cast # that's earlier than the vehicle it was put in.Most(not all)302s I've seen have a cast # the same,or MAYBE 1 year earlier than what ever they were in(original cars of course.I've got an early built '70 Galaxie w/a C9 351w block)).So,does this mean that the D0 cast # means that it was a casting original to 1970,but not necesarily a 1970 vehicle?

That number means it was designed in 1970 for the Galaxie line by the engine and power train engineering department. That's all I know. I'd look at the build date or cast date to determine if it's the original engine in the car or not. It should be very close to or the same month and year as on the car's door tag. The engine may also have a partial VIN stamped somewhere, but that's a whole other can of worms and I wouldn't know where to look on a 302 for that.

The casting numbers only change when the mold is changed.
If any little thing on the block is altered, they number the block for that year.
Now, if nothing is altered for the next 5 years, they will still be cast using the 5 year old part number.
So a D0 block could be used for several years.
I believe though that they changed the block up in 73, therefore it would have a D3 block. I could be wrong tho.

On the 460s from 71-78, it should go like this:
    D1 for 71-72 and D3 for 73-78.
There may have been some D1 spillover into 73, but probably not beyond 73 because the changes would have been emission related lowering of compression.

Like mentioned, there is casting number to indicate year of design change, date code cast in for the day of casting, and stamped code for date of engine build.

VIN numbers when present, are on the flat pad in the rear, behind the intake manifold. The casting prefix is useful in determining what decade the part was made and tells you the decade of the year used in the date code. Some parts were used for up to ten years before a change was made in the casting numbers. E7TE heads are one such example. These were produced from late 1986 to at least 1997. Ford also used two dots to differentiate decade changes on some parts, I've seen some FE stuff posted on the net with this.
