on an 8" rear, remove wheels, drums, then remove the 4 nuts that hold the axle retainer and backing plate to the rear end housing. Pull out the axles, slide the new 5 lug axles in, and button it up. Pretty easy swap on a 8". If it's a 7.5", you're in for a real treat. Still not that hard, but I think the 8" is MUCH easier.
swapping axles Little trick my dad taught me if the axles are tough pulling out reverse the drum on the stud. Put the 4 lugnuts on just a couple threads and use the drum as a slide hammer. The axles dont always come right out this will help. 74Maverick, Thom

For the 367th time (O.K.....Maybe not really).....you can't just swap "axles". You have to swap the entire axle housings. 4-lug and 5-lug 8" axle housings are different. Different housing, different bearings, ect.
