well its time to replace the flywheel so i figured ill just disconnect the trannyh and pull the engine rather than pull the tranny, this way i can do a few things to the engine while im at it, including giving it a much better paint job.. which mod will i really notice a difference from.. i already have hooker headers and a holley 4 barrel 750 carb. and eldebrok intake manifold.. i was thinking a new cam or maybe rocker arms, but im not sure.. i dont even know where to start with any of that as far as the numbers and everytihng.. im satisfied with the engine how it is but you can always go for a little more.. let me know if my thinking is off on this one thanks sean

its a c3.. and yeah i was planning on doing the engine compartment as well as the block.. forgot to mention that lol..
i believe its a c3 anyway.. ive never exactly looked into it, it is a 3 speed so it could be a c4 but i bought a transmission pan and gasket for a c3 and it fit. i suppose its possible they use the same one though
that must be what it is then.. i went into the auto store and he was like its got a c3 i was like okay and never thought anything of it.. ill just go with that then.. so i suppose i should go for the seal replacements.. is it that hard to pull the 302 out of the maverick?? this will be my first engine pull, i will have someone helping me who is experienced but im just curious, because i know the 302 is fairly large for that compartment so i was curious... i would imagine its pretty straight forward and considering mine doesnt have ac, power steering/brakes i would assume that makes it much easier as well.. maybe..
are those seals known to go bad alot or something im assuming since it was brought up?? ive always had a pesky transmission fluid leak and it seems to be getting worse.. i guess we will see.. i thought the leak was coming from the pan but i replaced everything there and it still leaks.. i dont know.. sounds like this whole flywheel going out is actually just a sign and a time to fix eveyrthing else as well
the seals(front and rear ) should be replaced everytime you get that close to them (just for good measure) cause it's a pain to have to pull the tranny or engine for a 4.00 seal, even if they are not leaking, if have the engine(or tranny for that matter) out,I replace the front and rear seals (and drain and fill the converter)GL.
Not sure how long you will have the engine out, but I would suggest notching the shock towers when the bay is empty...
i will probably end up pulling both, but im not sure.. the engine only has about 25000 miles on it to answer the first question that i missed.. but its the original flywheel, i guess i would have been smart to replace it as well ... im not sure what you mean by notch the shock towers. maybe you could expand on that?? ill end up doing the seals then.. and i think i may order a new converter. i think as well as clean everything up i am going to go ahead with a new cam so a new tourque converter is in need i suppose.. i think i may go ahead and lower the front end a bit as well.. doesnt really have anything to do with having the engine out but i figured i throw it out there..
Notch...gives you more space to get your hands in there and swap spark plugs, header bolts, etc. Of course, it looks better than this when you are finished...
allright.. i figured thats what you meant but just wanted to make sure.. ill have to check everything out there see if thats possible for me to do... i dont have much welding experience at all so it would probably look terrible and also not hold well.. but the extra room would indeed be nice.. ill check it out.. maybe ill have my freind do it for me or something..
