I am looking for a set of tires that meet these requirements: Slicks are not allowed. Hoosier Quick time, MT Sportsman, or any racing compound complex treaded tires are okay. Tires must fit under fender wells. I need to advice on what size tire will fit under the stock fender wells and can be mounted on a factory 14" or 15" rim. Entire rear suspension is stock. I will be running 4.11 gears with a mini spool. 4 spd, 302 cu. Any suggestions??
If a DOT tire is required I'd say go with a Hoosier PRO DOT or the Mickey T. ET Street. Mickey T offers a slick with a stiffer sidewall for use with stick shift cars, you might want to look at those. I think the tallest tire you can fit in a stock wheel well is a 28" x 9", i'm not sure if a 28x10 will work. I'm running a 26x10" on a 15x9" rim w/ 4.25" backspacing. Remember, tire manufacturers list tires differently, you need to look at "actual" measurements, like the ones listed in most of the Summit catalogs. I try to go by actual measurements instead of advertised measurements.
well as far as size im not too sure about that myself......havent gotten thats far yet, but jegs or summit have the street legal racing slicks you need..... www.jegs.com and www.summitracing.com now all you need is the size and type of offset/ backspacing you need for the mav
Tires I am running p275-60-15 BFG Drag Radials and they hook awesome... Cars are running 10's on them(not mine!) Scotty
Hey jim If I were you I'd check local.......when I bought my slicks I bought em here in town......about the same $$ as mail order and didn't have to pay the added ups charge....
Just have to comment on you running a mini spool with a stick shift. Wish that you would have installed a full spool instead. The mini is really for dirt tracking oval cars, the auto trans cars don't really put the stress on them as do the sticks and usually will last a long time. sliding the foot off the clutch and "wham bam" the torque is all applied to the spool and axles inside the carrier housing. Have seen to many explosions internally with the shifter cars. Even with a full spool, is not completely full proof. Just wanted to forwarn and maybe save you some money and work. If you are slipping the clutch on launch then it will probably work out ok. JMO.
You think I will have this problem with a mild built 302? The rear end was free. I can get a posi-track also, would this better? I am just afraid the posi track wont hold up after a season or two...dont know much about them. I can get both of them....one has extremely low gears 5.xx:1 and the other 4.11:1. I can get them built in any combination of the above. What would you suggest? I would love a detroit locker but cant afford one for quite a while and I will probably go with a 9 inch when I can. JP
Re: Re: Looking for racing tires Jim not 100% on the 8" limited slip but ole' Purple 70 has been running a clutch pack posi in Barney for several years now with out problems.....and this is with slicks and a healthy 347......and to be honest I think you and the misses would be happier with it on the street with the limited slip......but then again thats just my thoughts......
yes im just running a stock ford limited slip out of a older Bronco, we rebuilt it of course but havent had no trouble out of it yet *knock on wood* lol but im also running a C4 vs a stick,,,, but as far as a "Street Slick" option, Jim Allens car sold me on the ET Streets,, while my good ole' BFG DR's sat and smoked for about 60 feet he was gone lol... (but Shhhhhhhh i dont know where that happened at LOL)
Mickey Thompson Street ETs (right with a stick shift.. they have differant side walls) M&H's DOT's BFG Drag Radials... (these hook but nothing hooks like the Street ET.) in that order.. thats a personal opinion sizes? use what CometGT1974 is quoting
The only thing that will hook better than a ET street is a ET Drag, but then again, they're not much of a street tire. Neither is a ET Street for that matter. If it was mine, I'd just get another set of wheels just for the slicks, drive to the track and bolt 'em on there, and before you go home, change back to the street tires. Seems like a lot of trouble, but the first time you try to drive on wet pavement with DOT drag tires you'll know why lots of folks do it that way.
i have driven my Mav in the rain quite a few times (i hate driving it to the track and THEN mother nature decides to take a leak lol) but i can honesly say that the BFG drag radials do ok on wet pavement, unless you try to make them spin but that'll be the same with any tire... maybe its my lack of hp giving me a false since of faith in the tires?? LOL
