A friend of mine is giving me a 9 " inch rear out of a '69 Cougar. If I use it in a Maverick or Comet, will I have to use the bigger driveshaft that mates to it, or can I use the small driveshaft that is used in the Mavericks? There is quite a bit of size diffence between the two. They use the bigger driveshafts with Mustangs and Cougars with 8" rears and mating up to C4's.

Why is the "weenie" driveshaft used in the Maverick, clearance maybe? Is bigger better?

A while back this was talked about. I think the outcome was the smaller shaft is fine, if your going to take one apart it would be at the u joints not the small or large shaft.
Correct me if I'm wrong I think thats what was decided. Good Luck w/ the nine inch!

You will need to get the U-joint that has the small cross for the Maverick drive shaft and the big cross for the 9" rear end. I don't have the numbers with me but it is a common part used on some Fords stock.

That's how mine is set up. The parts guy at O'Rielly's knew exactly what I needed and had it in stock for something like $13 for the high dollar one.

My dad's Comet still had the original shaft in it also. And it had like 350,000 miles on it and the car was tubbed, making over 400 horsepower.

Watch the length of the Mav shaft with the 9" rear, it may be too long with the 9". The Cougar rear is also about 2" wider than your rear. I doubt the Cougar driveshaft will fit, the Cougar wheelbase was longer than the Stang's. Longer than a Mav for sure.

Yep! if it has the long flange on the pinion then you may have to either get the short flange or shorten your driveline.
