Ive read several articles reguarding swapping fuel tanks to allow for duel exaust ... I pulled my tank today and as i was taking it down it occured to me that instead of changing it out i could cut it down to narrow it .... I can bring it to the shop at work and have it welded back together by an experienced welder for free ...

The question i have is this .... How much should i narrow it ? And , Will it matter which side i cut ?

its the sending unit side that sits closer........i have been pondering what to do with this too.......the way the sending unit sits on the side of the tank i am wondering if i should narrow it and slide it closer to the passengerside rather than having fuel line that close to the exhuast...
anyone ever done this mod before?

Pretty sure it is the left side. Need to cut a minumum of 4"? My first thought is will it get in the way of the tank strap? If it does then you are getting into more fabrication. I am going from memory here as I looked at mine last summer and decided to go with a fuel cell.

Cutting it down and sliding it wont be an option because i want to keep the filler tube lined up ... If i can cut it next to one of the ridges i can work it to where the strap still rides in the valley portion of the tank and the other strap will still be in the same location as long as i only have to cut one side... I am going to put it back in and do some measuring just to see exactly what i need ...

For not a lot of money, just over 100 or so, you could get a brand new mustang tank and all the hoopla. I am surprised Dennis hasn't popped in yet.

Well, he already said he read the article. I assume it was the one I wrote cause I havent see another one out there. Best thing about the Mustang tank is that it moves the pick up to the front of the tank.

Put the Mustang tank in. The old used tank is too dangerous to cut up. It could kill you. Better be safe than sorry. I was a welder for Washington Gas and I know first hand what it is like to cut and weld on live gas. I have been on fire many times and it is not fun. Gasoline is even more dangerous.

From the looks of the straps and the area around the tank it seems that the tank had been replaced not too long ago because its in very nice shape ... The little bit of money i can save here can go somewhere else especially when concidering i can do this mod for vertually nothing ...

Im not too worried about the cutting and welding part i figure i can flush out the tank good and i can get a product from work called "FireSafe". Its a industrial powder type deal that the DOT makes us put down on grassy areas when were welding or using a cutting torch to keep the grass from going up in smoke ... It works very well .... I can pour some in the tank before i start cutting . You can even mix it with water and fill the tank with it . Again, Its free ....

But another question that arises is this , By narrowing the tank will the sending unit interfere with the tube that comes down through the top center of the tank ?

I guess i need to recearch this a little more before i start hacking away on this tank. I was hoping that someone else had done the mod already and could save me some time ... But ill keep ya'll posted and ill take some pics

I went out and took some measurements to see if this would work. It sounded like a good inexpensive, although labor intensive, alternative. The left strap is only about 1 1/2" from the indentation for the fuel sending unit. So you would have to relocate the strap. Other than that, you could easily remove 4" and put the strap in the next channel. Its going to take some good welding to make that thing leak proof though. Thats quite a long seam your gonna weld.

Yeah , I was looking at it also a little while ago ... Theres no way to make the strap sit in the recess without moving it ... Doesnt seem like too big of a deal to relocate the strap though ...

As far as the welding, I think im going to leave it up to some one who can do a nice job ... Im use to welding 1/4 to 3/4 H-Pile, I dont have a problem doing spot welds on sheet metal but i wont try something like this ...
