I went to pep boys and bought a flowmaster 40 muffler ($95) and installed it onto my stock exhaust system on my 200ci 1971 maverick. I installed the muffler right before the rear axle (between the axle and tranny). I didn't keep the part of the exhaust that turns up over the rear axle. Instead I just welded the exhaust tip to the outlet of the muffler. My problem is the new exhaust system is too loud. And I know I don't have any exhaust leaks so I know it's not that. When it idles or at higher speeds it sounds good. But right around 5mpg-30mph the bass is so high inside the car...yikes! Anything i can do to decrease the sound coming inside the car? Also, in case you might ask, the exhaust is secured to the stock exhaust bracket with the exaust rubber/metal bracket. I'll try to take a pic. But any suggestions would help.
    thanks

I would think that if you completed the pipe all the way to the rear it would cut down the noise level a bit, but it would probably still be pretty rowdy. V8 cars that I have been around that just have turndowns in front of the axle, did calm down some with tailpipes added. I moves the sound another 4 feet behind you and aims it back instead of reverbing off the ground.

One thing that you might look at also is that Flowmaster has engineered a new muffler for the 4.0 V6 Mustangs. This is not a rehash of their muffler for the GT. They have a sound clip of it on their website. The main problem that I see with this is that the Mustang muffler placed is in roughly the stock Mav location, but is shaped more like your 40 series muffler, and likely would not fit if all the way back. It may be possible to put it where you currently have the 40.

Flowmaster + turndown = DRONE in a major way.

You will get some relief with a tail pipe.
Give it a try before you give up on the muffler.

I have those mufflers on my 302 Maverick w/ full tailpipes and there is still a major drone inside the car at pretty much any speed.

Sound deadener under the carpet or a new muffler.
It can't possibly be worse than a fart canned ricer or a Harley.

With enough camshaft, the drone becomes enoyable..Think really big solid roller, long duration...suhwheet......I run nothing but 3 inch in/out 2 chambers on my junk, and already have a set waiting to go on my Maverick when the stroker Clevelnad goes in. Gawd, I cant wait.

hey this is helpful cause i was thinking about putting a flowmaster on my 200 in the future. i dont think you can escape the drone with anything but a stock style muffler. i have a glasspack in place of the stock muffler and even all the way back there, theres a little resonance in the car at low speeds. but i can live with it if the sound of my car is one of a kind..:)

Place the muff right behind the rear bumper with the tail pipe out to the bumper. That may help. That is how mine is mounted. It still sets off car alarms as I drive up the street, but it's not so bad in the car.

thanks guys, I'm actually getting a little used to it because it's mostly loud when I'm going like 20mph. On freeway it's not too bad. I think I'm gonna try to weld the rest of the exhaust on. If that's no good then I'm going with a different muffler. Thanks for the info.

Thats the problem with exhaust systems. They never sound like what you think they might. But a 2 chamber flowmaster dumping under the car? That has to be loud. here are a few things I have learned over the years.
    1. the bigger the pipe, the louder it will be.
    2. The father back you place the muffler, the louder it will be though not by much.
    3. Bigger tailpipes yield a deeper sound, a little bit louder.
    4. Mufflers with turndowns under the car are loud and deep, kick up dirt storms from under your car which is annoying to other hobbiests when their car gets dirty as you drive by revving you engine.

Here is my advice. Try running a new stock sized tailpipe to the rear bumper. I think that will be a big enough change to satisfy you. If its still too loud you can always cut a second muffler/ resonator in behind the axle.

run 2-1/2 inch pipe all the way back and over the rear and cap it off with a supertrapp adjustable muffler. LOL I still love the way that thing sounded on my Blue Maverick.... nothing like living in the past

Man, didn't even think about kicking up dust. Thanks for telling me. So what I'm gonna do is add the rest of the exhaust all the way to the rear bumper but then switch this exhaust over to the non-daily driver maverick and find a milder muffler to add on this car.
