Found this one on Ebay. Any of you knowledgeable guys out there have an opinion? Ever heard of King bearings?: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/5-0-...ryZ33620QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
I did nothing horrible that I heard. Ask if the wrist pin goes into the oil ring with those rods. I like the 3.25 stroke with the shorter rod it keeps the pin lower in the piston less probs with smoking.
I'm not a big fan of Probe pistons. What brand is the crank? If its' a no-name chinese crank, you're playing russian roulette...some are good some arent. Then again, it depends on how you use it. Some of us use them to the limits of the stock block and end up with a pile of scrap cast iron.... And as to the pin in the oil ring debate, I for one am so tired of hearing about it that I am almsot ready to build somethign with a 1.000" compression height piston, with the pin in the oil ring AND the 2nd ring, just to prove that it doesn't make a damn bit of difference if it's built RIGHT in the first place! If the cylinders are honed with the right grit for the rings and have the right clearance, it won't be an issue. OR if you do some homework, you'll find that 331 pistons made by Mahle are set up to use the 5.4" rod but they don't have the pin in the ring....Mahle uses 1.5mm top rings and a 3mm bottom ring, which puts the ring pack close enough together that the pin doesn't intersect. Need pics? I have a set going into my 414" windsor. And that brings us to the long rod vs. short rod debate---or is this going to turn into a pissing contest too? If you have a choice between long vs short rods, go with the longer ones. Not for power but for less wear on the cylinders due to less piston rocking. But most of your 331's and 347's will use a 5.4" rod because it's teh most common route, and IIRC, uses GM V6 rod bearings which are very common in most parts stores. Oh and King bearings have been out for years. Good bearings. I don't use them because Mahle/Clevites are available locally for a good price and generally they're in stock so it's just easier to use them. If the suppliers had Kings in stock, I'd run 'em.
I'm looking for reliability more than anything. Basically I have a 93 5.0 engine that I just want a little more kick out of. Strictly street machine. Is it possible to put a kit together for the same price or cheaper with know good parts?
what's wrong with Probe pistons??? I'm building my 331 stroker, did my research and heard good stuff about the probe stuff.
i've got probe pistons and eagle rods in my other motor. haven't had a problem in the 3 years i ran that motor. always heard good things about them before.
I also use them in my 347, no problems so far. I think the issue Mavman is concerned about, is the weight of them compared to Mahle's, strictly for his race engines. I also don't think the pin placement is causing oil and smoke issue's, all depends on how the engine was machined and maintenance during it's life. Most piston mfgr's. certainly have engineered their products and tested them before release for sale. JMO
yeah and it will have lead in it.. so dont lick it...hahaha i couldnt resist.. the deal seems like a great deal.. but yeah i didnt realize, if it is all cheaply made parts.. then the old saying, you get what you paid for
i used king bearings in my starsky and hutch mav, it was a warmed over 302. and i beat the snot out of that thing over and over and over again, so i definetly recommend them
I emailed the guy about the crank and he said it is made by RPM Maxx. I found them on the web: http://www.rpmmaxx.com/cranks.html Looks like good stuff to me.
Did you look here? http://www.eaglerod.com/ I'm shopping right now for the same thing, I have a 93 HO motor getting ready for my 74 Grabber.
My engine builder kind of picked and chose what he liked. See the build list here: http://www.maverickcorral.homestead.com/engine.html
