well i was looking at investing in a Holley 4 barrel carb but i had no idea where to start. what cfms should it have and what is good for the 302 i have. Are there are any other good brands. EDIt: i forgot to ask if my exhaust will need any modification for it to work well.(if so i will probably save up around 1000 dollars and buy intake,4bbl carb, headers, and super 44s and then do it all at the same time)
It depends on the engine mods. A stock engine will do very well with a 600 cfm vacuum secondary 4 bbl, a dual plane manifold like a performer and a set of headers. If you have a cam up to 214 SAE duration (@.050") the same combo is tuned for the 5500 - 6000 rpm range that the cam will give you. If you are going to put aftermarket heads on and a bigger cam then a 600 - 720 cfm vacuum secondary carb is good. You will lose low end as you get more on top so if you are running a C4 then you will need a higher stall speed converter - 3000 rpm or so. Look at your cam specs and get a converter to match it. If you are going all out for drag racing then you need to run more converter, a big single plane manifold and big headers. Keep in mind that you will need to build your C4 to match your hp. the stock V8 C4 is only good for about 300 hp. With a TransGo shift kit you can push it to 350 hp. If you build your engine beyond that then you will need some mods made to make the C4 live. The C4 properly prepared can take over 1000 hp but they are expensive to build to that point. Plan to put about half the money into the transmission that you put into the engine. Start with the biggest cooler (30,000 pounds of capacity) that you can find. You can't get too much cooling to the tranny. Use the radiator cooler too. Go from the front cooler line to the radiator cooler, out the radiator to the auxillary cooler and then back to the rear cooler fitting. The 5/16" metal lines are fine for any application of cooler.
im planning on getting an AIR gap intake holley 600cfm 4bbl carb, headmans, hooker, doug thorely headers (cant decide) and supper 44s. what cam would go well with that and how does that setup sound, oh it will be turndown cuttoffs before the axlea edit: im looking for a fast streetable maverick thats loud as hell.lol well...........not that loud
If your going to do all that, buy one of those Edelbrock kits that come with the carb, heads, and cam. Then it's all matched.
Typically you will save about 10-15% when you buy a bundled setup. Go to their website and price the thing separately and see. You can also try PAW (Performance Automotive Warehouse) to see what kits they have.
Why not just use a matched combo from edelbrock. Thay have packages in there catalog. :edit: What dave said.
Good choices The Air gap will be fine even in the lower rpms. Other good intakes are the older Edelbrock F4B, Ford Racing's current A321, and Weiand's Stealth. The Performer intake will just limit your future engine mods, it's no better than a stock Ford 289/302 4 bbl intake (any of which can be had for $50-75 used) Top it with a Holley 570 Street Avenger, instead of a 600. As for cam choice, that depends on what heads you have, what the compression ratio is, and what you want out of the cam.
