Thats one of those depends on who you ask and what mods are done to the engine. If it's dead stock, The OEM Motorcraft plugs are great. For the wires I would just use a good set of aftermarket ones like Bosch. My motor is somewhat modified and I had to play with the plug type and heat range to find some that work for me. I use Taylor 8mm wires but, I wouldn't ever recommend them to anyone. The second time I removed them I broke them all and had to remake the plug ends. You should change the Distributor cap and rotor its usually better that way. You still got a points ignition? I would change them too if you got them.

I don't remember what year Ford quit using points on the Mavs/Comets but I think yours should have points in it.(going by gut feeling not memory) If it does replacing the points is a cheap and easy repair/maintenance item. But, you should look into a replacement that uses a control module and pick-up coil. MSD, Accel, and others make some good stand alone distributors that not only look good but don't require the constant attention that points need. And there are several other cheaper options but, for a novice would be more complicated

If your distributor is stock and only has one wire on it going to the ignition coil, it has points.

Points were eliminated in mid 1975 if memory serves me correct. I remember looking at cars while at Carlisle a few years ago and seeing the change and pointing it out to Dennis.
