I have not been on muck as of late do to mad hours at work. I thought id share a tidbit of what Ive uncoverd with my car. Ill start at the begining, about 2 races ago I noticed a slight sell of oil when the car was idleing and a bit of oil consumtion. So I checked pvc and comp test all good, so after swaping to a Vic Jr intake I noticed oil buildup on the back of the intake valves. So I checked the valve seals bingo a few were pulled off of the guide. Well that must be the issue....wrong after popping some springs off to replace the seals I found that the valve was moving a discusting amount in the guide like about .050 not good. So with only 20 runs and less then 100 miles on them I called AFR. The guys were very nice and long story short they coverd everything. Fixed the heads, even paid the shipping. So I got them back and Im putting them on real soon. Hopefully when I go to the track next Ill pick up those 2 tenths I lost.....lol
Good to here they stand behind there stuff like that. I`m going to get the ones you have for my 351 for the 4dr. And thats just a little more incentive to go with them.
Sounds good! When you got them, did you disassemble an clean all out? New compete heads have a bunch of junk in them. Glad a West Virgina'en is posting,,,,I sure miss that other one from the far east W. Va.!
Glad they took care of it. I just don't think AFR heads are all that IMO. Over rated and just pay more to the mags to push thier product. I ve heard a few guys loosing valves at the track becuae the guides failed. They never gotten taken care of last I heard. Glad you did
I had the heads flowed to see how close they were to AFR's clame. I can tell you they are right on the #. The guy that flowed them's SF bench is within 1 cfm of AFR's bench (Maxflow Motorsports,Harisonburg Va.). He said they looked good and I looked at them and thought they were fine. I did not disasemble the heads after all these are bolt on heads and should not need to be disasembled and cleaned. I understand now it is a good idea, but if they dont say to then I wasnt thinking about it. As much as it sucks to have to go through all this Im very glad that AFR stood behind them. Were has Eddie been ??? Oh and going from 12.98 to 11.96 and 101 to 111mph both runs @ 3200ft dens Alt. I dont think its hype. Best $$ I ever spent on the car.
Glad to hear they took care of you. Warning for future spring upgrade. If you ever go to a heavier seating spring (say, for use with a taller cam), usually the I.D. of the inner spring comes dangerously close to the "stock" neoprene valve seals that AFR puts on their heads. The machinist showed me where some of the blue neoprene had been cut off the O.D. of the seals on my heads. Fortunately, the machine shop caught this and changed the standard issue springs out with white PTFE (Teflon) seals. They are narrower on the O.D. and they hold up better against heat. My heads are about 6 years old. AFR might have gone to a different seal now (btw, my heads came with the upgraded springs from AFR). Good luck at the track! -Rick
Ain't it shame that we've become so used to crappy service that we speak and brag about good service when it should be that we only speak up when we get bad service. My, oh my, how times have changed.
The used set of AFRs I bought last year only had a couple thousand miles on them and three of the guides needed replaced. One valve moved about 1/8" side to side! The new SBF AFR heads are using lightweight, small diameter stem Chevy LSx valves and better springs.
I see... The heads I have are the Comp heads I got them when they first came out.(thats why I had them flowed) The valves are stainless, Heavy things....But Im very happy
