    Hey Guys,

Looking for some help in figuring out clutch pedal set up, I am going to putting a 4 speed in the 71 Mav and really have nothing to go by. I have located a clutch pedal unit, but it does not have the rod or Z bar, it's just the pedals and bracket. Does anyone have a list of additional parts needed or even better some pics showing how everything sorta goes together. It will be greatly
appreciated. Oh by the its going to be a V/8. Thanks for the help.

    Thanks

Allen I am In the same boat, I found the z-bar at AUTO KRAFTERS, then I found by trial and error that the z-bar was tooled wrong, they are supposed to be correcting the problem, the guy i spoke with it would be two to three months before they would be ready, The Maverick Connection has the z-bar listed, as far as the clutch rod goes, I found some for a mustang that might work at mustangs unlimited, Good luck

    Mitchell,

Thanks for the response, keep me posted on the Mustang rod unit.
What part of NC are you from, I am originally from the Bailey/Wilson area, and also lived in Salisbury for a short while as a kid. Talk to you later

Allen , I live in Fuqay-Varina, thats just south of Raleigh, I forgot to mention the reason the auto krafters, z bar was wrong, the company that made them, bored the hole in the end for the 1 inch pivot bushing like the big block runs, but I am gonna make mine work somehow, Mitchell

I have an idea but I am not 100% sure about it. Might take some fabrication but what if you tried to use something with a quadrant and cable like a later model mustang. I have a Steeda setup with an aluminum quadrant and adjustable cable in my mustang and it works great. These parts are plentiful and with a little creativity you might make it work. Plus it would be infinitely smoother and give you tons more exhaust clearance. Just a thought.

    Bigbully,

Thanks for the input. I,ll try to take a look at that and see if it will work. I noticed someone else on the board here had stated that they were using a cable set up.

    Thanks

i can tell you that some 302's dont have the bolthole in the block for the pivot point, usually newer models since they went to cable and hydraulic clutches but according to my book the pinto/bobcat had an assembly that bolted onto the transmission housing and you might get it to work should be easy to find in a boneyard........

also the granada/monarch used the same clutch assembly as the maverick/comet if you can find one

    good luck

You cannot easily adapt a cable operated clutch linkage because the cable will give you a motion from back to front when the pedal is pushed, You need the opposite. The cables are not long enough to turn 180 degrees and come up from the back to the clutch fork. If your going to use a T5, then you can get the T5 bell housing which is set up for the cable and that will work OK. But for a toploader, your going to have to find mechanical linkage or go hydraulic. If you can at least find a Zbar, you can get big block mustang frame and engine block pivots. The frame side will have to be modified to work. I modified my 6cyl linkage and used it for years. Others have used all Mustang components. Its just going to take some modifications to get it to work.

The Mercury Bobcat that I had, had a clutch cable. Darn car and cable was so rusted that I pulled it clean thru the firewall when I stepped on the clutch. A permanent set of vice grips mounted on the cable and up against the firewall fixed that problem!!
