last night around 6:30 on im north I-96 mid way between baltimore and Delaware and my engines dies I drift on to the sholder and pop the hood to see that the fuel pump cracked off its flange so i got towed to the nearest auto zone ($120) and bought a new pump ($22). ended up changing it right there in the parking lot. 20 min later im back on the road. got in last night around 9:30 and fell right to sleep. otherwise it was a very good day
it was a napa pump, and ive always been under the impression there stuff was a little better. i bought it new and it had about 10,000 miles on it. i never put 200 miles on it all at once like that in one day but i still dont think it should have happened. now its got the cheapo autozone one on there but at least it got me home.
i know I6 pumps are kinda notorius for leaking gas or leaking oil from where they mount to the block but ive never heard of one busting off like that. The pump that came with the car leaked gas the sam way. ive never had any fuel pump bust like that on any car. good thing it didnt take the cam with it. other then that 2hr ordeal both me and my g/f had a very good time.
sorry to hear that. glad it was a pretty easy fix. knock on wood. i'm still on the way. drove 725 miles today.
Sorry to hear that. I'm sure it was just a fluke. I have never had problems with 6 cylinder pumps leaking gas or oil at the mount. Maybe the mounting surface on the block is not quite flat and warping the pump base. It would also explain the leaking problem. Just a thought.
Super crappy pump material and a porous casting caused that pump to break. Probably a Chinese casting company.
How true, it will be many more years before they perfect casting on par what was made here in the USA. The sad part is the auto parts suppliers and the auto manufactures are using more and more because its cheap, I had the front rotors wear out before the brake pads on my Escape so expect to replace the rotors every time you do a brake job on the newer cars.
im starting to think low mile parts from junkyards probably have more life left in em then a brand new part. some of you guys are probably still running around with stock 30+ year old pumps
The pump on mine is 20 years old.Purchased at Big-A auto parts in china lake C.A.When I asked the counter guy for a heavy duty he looked at me funny.15 psi at idle 24 at 5600 rpm and still goin.(yes I use a regulator)
I have the original fuel pump, master cylinder, front brake pads, rotors, water pump, alternator, and other small items on my Stallion. Mechanical items such as engine, trans and rearend have been replaced due to extreme abuse. Dan ps, the original wiper blades were replaced at Roundup 06, thought it was gonna rain, and it did.
