you need a v8 flex plate and bellhousing i believe but the extra power of a v8 is probably more than that trans can handle anyway

    Hey Chris! Welcome aboard.

If the tranny's an automatic, it will work with a 302 provided the following are addressed:

1.) 302 engine you're swapping in? Pre-'82 302 engine balance is 28.2 oz, post-'82 5.0 liter HO balance is 50 oz. Different engines require different flexplates in regard to tooth pattern and balance factor.

2.) Straight six engine you're swapping out? A 250's bell-housing will work with a 302, however, the balance is different b/c of the 250 being balanced internally (zero weight). A 200's C-4 needs a V-8 bell-housing and torque-converter. Neither flexplate works with the 302. I'm not even sure if the 170's came with an automatic option, so, no ideas there.

Also, make sure the tooth pattern matches up with what you need. 157 or 164 tooth? Probably, 157. In regards to power handling, a stock C-4 will handle a stock 302; even mild mods, with a better cooler. Change cams and you might need a higher stall converter. Start getting some serious ponies through your engine, and you need to build the tranny to cope. C-4's are tough, but, like everything else, you can break 'em.

Hope this helped. The "Technical" division of this forum has some great info. Try checking there, too.

Those guys hit it dead on...
The issue with the 200 C4 though is they actually come with fewer parts than a V8 C4.
The clutch packs are weaker and fewer on the 200 C4.

Check with PaulS, he knows alot more about it.
I just know the bottom line, he's got details.
