ok so i might need a new rear for my mav...what width should i get it...and where are the measurements taken from...i might be able to get an 8.8 aswell so my mistake may end up as an upgrade...my mistake is wet roads plus a curb = more front end work and a possibly bent rear...hopefully a bent rim

A standard Maverick rear-end is 56-1/2 inches wide. 58-inches is about perfect...

From the face of the rotor hat.(rim sits up against it) Just like you would measure drum to drum.

You're not likely to find one of those anyway. Only Lincoln Versailles models had them, and they were "one-leggers" with 2.50:1 gears...

And the Versailles rear was also available in the Monarch as well and also had Traction Loc. and drum options. One of these I had came from under a Monarch, and had 2.50's with Trac-loc. Had another from a Versailles (351W car) that was 2.50 with an open diff. Seen one under an 80 Granada in Houston a few months back that had drums. The 57-59 Ford 9" rear is a bolt in and has identical measurements as the 8" Mav rear. These often had 3.70 gears and WAR case center housings.

Wheel flange-to-wheel flange distance on '77-'80 Versailles rear end is 58".

These 9-inch rears with factory disc brakes were available (optionally) on the '75-'80 Granadas and Mercury Monarchs. They were standard equipment in the '77-'80 Lincoln Versailles.

MOST of these rear ends had open (single track) differentials, but not all of them. SOME had 2-pinion (spider) gear Traction-Lok differentials, and some had 4-pinion Traction-Lock differentials.

There were only (4) rear end ratios available for these 9-inch rears: 2.47, 2.50, 2.75 and 3.00:1.

1979 Lincoln Versailles rear in my '68 Mustang: http://img502.imageshack.us/img502/8302/versaillesrearendeo3.jpg

There were also some 9-inch, drum brake-equipped rear ends installed in the '75-'80 Granadas/Monarchs. This is a photo of the 9-inch (formerly) drum brake rear end I bought a few years ago from an '80 Monarch that was powered by a 250 cubic inch inline six. I converted it over from drums to SN95 Cobra discs (this is the rear end that will be replacing the Versailles under my '68): http://www.ultrastang.com/images/2006/cobrabrakehosemount0243cf_2.jpg
