I had a 1980 Bobcat with sports package that had a wheel just like the sports wheel but all black. don't remember how the horn worked. so maybe Pintos and Bobcats also
Steering wheel So Hawkco, is your three spooked really cool steering wheel from a maverick stallion or is it a factory mustang 11stallion steering wheel with the horn in the middle,i want to know the straight goods so i can prowl the local hill side and small town wreakers Jimmy2gates
A very important statement, as my current 13" grant wheel does NOT fit me, and I will have to do some mods to the seat brackets so I can get my legs under it...
I don't what all models had the sport steering wheel. Post #9 probably answered your question. I'd suggest sending a PM to dhimes (Dan Hines) and ask him. He's the brains of this outfit.
As far as stock Maverick steering wheels, I think the '75 & up look the best. I put one on my '73 back in '87. I later got a couple of Grants, and now I have the Mustang-II wheel...
Back when I had my 77, I took a stock wheel and a little silicone and stuck a grill medallion on the horn button. It looked factory and did not affect the horn operation.
And the reason it's on his chair: It stays there all the time. He failed to show his walking cane beside the chair that he pretends to be a shifter. Since he only has Maverick parts, he just pretends to driving one every time he sits down to watch television. This is Hawkco watching television--->>>
When I ordered my Stallion in Sept of 1975 the sport wheel was not an option. I went thru the order guide line by line and I would have ordered that wheel. I believe the sport wheel was a later in the year option. I will also add my 76 Cobra II did not have one of those wheels either, and it was an early build also. Dan
Just wanted to let everyone know that the sport steering wheel pictured that everyone is referring to was never factory available on any Maverick. They were available on many other Fords of the period including Pintos, Bobcats, Mustang II's, and even trucks. You have to watch out for the later versions which came on later model Mustangs and Capris. Those look the same, but did not have a provision for a horn in the center. Those cars had the horns on the turn signal stalks. When you see the term "leather wrapped" or "sport grip" steering wheel in Maverick sales literature, they are referring to what looks like the stock Maverick steering wheels, but they have a thin, but noticable leather wrapping. The reason Mavericks never had these steering wheels is that Mavericks never offered an optional guage package as did all the other models that these were optional on. So while these are probably the best looking factory wheel ever offered by Ford, and certainly the best looking of that period, they were never factory available on the 70-77 Maverick or Comet. Incidentally, there are also two versions of the sport wheel initially pictured here, the standard, padded grip, and the much thicker, leather-wrapped version. The leather-wrapped one seems to be significantly harder to find. If anyone wants to post a photo of what the Mavericks offered as a "sport grip" steering wheel, I have a photo of one I recently sold.
