During my recent trip under the dash, I found this yellow thingy. I haven't found any reference to it in my Chilton's and I haven't figured out what it is. It is probably not essential for me to find out, but it would be nice to know.
Is you car a 74 or 75 model? If it is that box connects to a "safety feature" that wont let you start the car unless your setting in the drivers seat. You should also have a little box under the hood on the DS just in front of the shock tower that has a little red button on it. At least thats what I think it is, some one please correct me if I'm wrong.
It's called the seatbelt interlock system....or something similar. Most of them became problems or a headache years ago and someone would have unhooked the wires under the seat. They have quick connections. If your seatbelt is not fastened in the driver's seat, the car will not start when the system is functional. You likely have a little box/bracket with a button on top next to the washer fluid box on the driver's side of the engine compartment. That button is a bypass for mechanics when working on the car so it would start.
I thought maybe it was a muffler bearing storage compartment......glad y'all cleared it up!! Seriously though, I didn't have a clue. Never seen one of those before. Interesting........
The plug is diconnected under the seat and the "little red button" has apparently been removed. I guess the "yellow thingy" is a last vestige of a bad idea. (The car is a '74). It may go away soon as well. Thanks.
I think that what you're talking about only applied to the 74 models. They changed the system in 75. I owned a 74 Pinto at that time and it was a pain in the ---.
My '75 had a box in the same spot, i thought it was a starter interlock, but i didn't think any '75s had one after congress outlawed them? Build date on mine is 11/74. I'll get a pic if I can find it, but I might have tossed it already.
