Hey guy's, the super stock maverick is totaled. On April 15th I was at the LODRS Divsion 4 race at the Texas Motorplex. The weekend was going well except for the weather delays. On Friday I had run a best of 9.96 @ 133.50. This was my best time to date. I had reworked the heads over the winter and was definately making more power, my previous best was 10.12 @131. The 9.96 was at 1600 ft alt with a strong headwind. Saturdays weather did not allow any runs. On Sunday first round was 1900 ft alt with little wind and sun on the track. All of us were wondering what to dial. I was matched against Fred Henson SS/AH. He runs about 151 mph. I knew he would be hard to judge. I dialed a 9.94. The car ran well and felt great. At the first mph marker I didn't see him so I jammed the brakes. I crossed first and won. Running a 9.98 @ 124. I was in the right lane and the car took a hard right. In a split second the car was on the left 2 wheels and smacked the guardrail head on. Then the bottom of the car hit the guardrail and that one really hurt. The car rode a short ways and then rolled on its roof and slid about 400ft. My back was killing me. I ended up with 2 fractured vertebrae. I was in a brace for 8 weeks. I just unloaded the car this week. The safety equipment did its job. The car is totaled, the frame is bent, it shoved the left shock tower back and up about 4 inches. I am beginning the disassemly. The engine, trans and rear end appear intact. Ashton

Man! Talk about a wild ride. I'm sorry you hurt back, but I'm glad that is all that got hurt. Thank God for the advancements and improvements of safety equipment.

Man, that's a shame! You had a lot of history with that car. But, at least you're ok. Think you're going to re-build it, or just find another one?

    Later,

I really hate to see a car crash in drag racing, especially a nice one and really especially if it is a Maverick. I'm glad you are OK, that's the most important part. These things always make me think about my car and that this sort of thing can happen to anyone very easily.

Do you know why it made the hard right? Brake malfunction, fluid on the track, or what? Didn't you have the Aerospace brakes? Did you have drums in the back? Sorry about your accident, but glad you are OK.

    Thanks

I haven't decided on what body type to use in the future. My best bet would be to use a maverick again secondary to custom headers etc. and I like Mavericks. It had disk brakes all around. I don't know what happened. The best I've heard is that Ennis has a narrow groove on the top end and its all concrete. I have hit the brakes hard before with no problem but that was my first visit to that track. Later that day there were several more accidents and most in the same lane and the same spot on the track? They say that if you are out of the groove on the top end and hit the brakes there that the tire in the groove locks (front or back) and slings the car that way, this would make sense for my accident. But there are no flat spots on the tires? I haven't completely taken the car apart yet, so I may have more info in the future. Thanks for the encouragement. Ashton

Man I'm sorry to hear about your accident, hope you recover fully! I am glad I was at the Roundup in 05 and was able to see you race it. Glad to hear you are thinking of building another Maverick.

Glad you are okay. That's a shame. I think your Dad ran that car back in the 70's? Correct?

Heal up and find a replacement. I'd paint it up the same color scheme.
