Of to the junk yard tomorrow and I would like to know what Ford vehicles are going to have 351 motors?
Probably wouldn't matter to me really its going to get built up regardless, but a Windsor would be nice.
So any Ford van from 1969 to 1996 has 351 engines; Is there a physical distinction between a 302 and a 351 so I wont pull the wrong motor.
the trucks had them the torinos/stang had them i think the granadas had them also the 351 block has a taller deck height
95-up are the only rollers. Vans didn't get 351s right away. Probably got them as an option around 75. Ws will be most common in cars until the early 80s. Mid-80s up, they will be mostly in trucks and vans.
If you look just below the distributor mount, on the block, the 351w has a vertical rib for reinforcement. The 302 has no rib. Also, you will find the 302 intake manifold is roughly 9" wide. The 351w intake will be roughly 12" wide. I don't have the intakes in front of me to measure, these are just guestamates.
They're easy to spot if they're EFI truck engines. They usually say "5.8 EFI" right on the top of the upper intake. Once you see a 302 sitting next to a 351w, the difference is obvious and you can spot them a mile away.
How easy do you think it would be to pull out a "SBF" in a yard with just two guys who have about 10 years shop experience on foreign cars, and what tools are a "must" to bring?
351 If going with a 351 definitely go with a Windsor. It will be a tough fit in a Mav (exhaust), but Clevelands are worse (wider) and Modifieds are taller and wider, besides being somewhat orphaned by the aftermarket. Here is a picture of mine with a 351W. Note the cut shock towers. The exhaust is still very tight. These were used 68 Cougar headers if an unknown brand that had an inch removed from each pipe and two pipes remade. This was done 10 years ago, so I don't know if someone has better options out there now. These are wicked tight because they still want to be right where the upper A-arms want to live. Cutting the shock towers is a nice mod. It gives you a lot more room to work on it. Are you sure you want a 351? If I were to do this over now, I would still cut the shock towers, but only after doing the Shelby A-arm mod remounting them (ignore the rest of this sentence) higher for better handling, so the towers could not be cut down as low. That wouldn't matter because I would be building a 347 stroker and still keeping the smaller 5.0 engine size. Cheap stoker kits out there now and it is a much better fit. Maybe I'm getting old, but easier-for-the-same results makes a lot of sense. I spent an awful lot of time and energy getting this to work.
