how do i chose my gears????? Ring and Pinion Ratio???? was thinking 350.1--390.1 somewhere in betwen Ring Gear Bolts??? Pinion Spline Count?? Ring Gear Teeth? i wana go fast of the line but still get good gas mileage it is my dayly driver.
There is no such thing unless you go with an over drive transmission. Its always a compromise and 3:55s are about as high as I would go without it. Spline count is in reference to the spider gears, not the pinion. All 8s are 28.
It's an 8" unless somebody did a swap. There are various rpm calculators floating around out there on the web, where you plug in your tranny top gear ratio, your diff ratio and your tire height, and it will tell you what rpms you will be going at what speeds. You didn't tell us anything about your motor, and that is an important consideration. The traditional stock 302 or 250 six isn't much good past 5000 rpm, and even a 3.50 gear could get very annoying if you spend any time on freeways, especially with a 70mph speed limit. You also didn't tell us what kind of driving you normally do, which is another important consideration.
I just changed from 3.50s to 4.11s raised my rpms by 800 at 55mph not very friendly on the highway 3,400 cruising at 60, but sure helps to break the tires loose. Easiest way to tell a 9 inch is by the 2 bolts at the bottom, you cant get a socket on them, also the top of a 9 inch is curved and an 8 inch is flat across (the top bolts)
Well, you could ask "Shadowmaster", but I think I already know what he'd tell you. Probably something like 4.56 gears, along with a 4000-stall torque converter, a 750-850cfm carb (hell, maybe even a 1050 Dominator!), and a nice set of 3-1/2" dual exhaust pipes...
togetic2002, if it is a 9" you won't be able to get a socket on the 2 bottom nuts. also the 8" has a sort of hood over the top of the shaft area.
