I have been all over the rear trying to check for the plug to check the fluid can't find one?????

I have an 8 inch rear with 5 lug I looked on my 8.8 chunk and found the plug that takes a socket extention to remove but cannot find anything on this 8????

The only thing I found on the entire axle is a vent tube ????

I want to check the rear fluid before I run the car on the road and this is holding me up.. I wanted to drive it this morning but I don't want to damage the gears....Is there such an inspection plug or am I crazy????

Inspection plug and filler plug are the same. Fill it until its level with the hole.

It's on the front of the chunk, driver side, actually facing the rear tire. It is small, a 3/8" square plug (3/8" ratchet will fit in it). About even with the centerline of the driveshaft...

It could EASILY be filled with gunk and hidden...

If sometime in the past your center section was swapped for an early model (pre-67) you will not have a inspection plug. On the early 8" rears the inspection plug was in the rear end housing.

I speak from experience as I swapped my 2.79 center for a 3.55 center from a Falcon. Now I have no inspection plugs and my friend has 2 on his 37 Ford.:(

Time to pull it apart and drill and tap a few holes...

When i did my gear change, I even drilled and tapped a 3/8" pipe threaded hole in the bottom for future fluid changes. Fill at the top, drain at the bottom, like it should have been from the factory...not "take the chunk out to drain it".

I fill my through the axle tube. Soon my problem will be fixed with a new 3.80 center section.
