Hello all, I just bought my first Maverick. I think it's an original Grabber from 1970. Could someone help me identify the car by the VIN? It's 1K91T140542 I think the original color was yellow. It's hard to tell, I found at least 3 different colors so far along with about a 1/8" thk. skim coat of bondo over 1/3 of the car. It's got the Grabber hood and grill and a v8 w/auto. The car is in sad shape and the seller miss-lead me as to the condition of the car. So far, I have found that the car was in a rear-end collision, buckling the trunk floor and the tail-light panel looks like a crumpled piece of paper. They bondoed up the outside to cover it up. The roof and the hood also have bondo covering up more dents. the quarters have bondoed up rust holes too. The drivers side rear shock tower is busted out and missing the shock. The front looks like it was hit as well, the drivers fender is probably unsalvagable and the front crossmemeber under the radiator is cracked on both ends. They chopped and welded the shock towers, but it looks like a stock motor with ex. manifolds? It also has a clutch pedal, an auto column shifer and an auto floor shifter. Well, I'm done venting for now. Maybe one day I'll have my Mav on the road again.
The VIN on the 1970 does not provide any details in which the car is a grabber or not. Also, the grabber hood did not appear till 1971. Also, none of the 1970 cars were produced with a V8. Most grabbers however were 6 cylinder cars. After this many years, all cars need work, and most have been hit here and there. Dan ps your VIN tells me the car is a 1971,, and it does not have a 93 in it. So it is not a grabber.
Like the the other guys said, not a Grabber. 1K91T is a '71 built in Kansas City, non Grabber that came with a 200 straight 6 originally. If you post the rest of the codes on the sticker inside the door jam, we can tell you more about the car.
:Handshake Earl, and i look at a thing like you are describing in Ga. up off I-20. from the description of the bondo (car) J/K i wonder if he got his money back from the bodywork (or lack of)? if you are planning to get this car ready for the road there are some safty points to check first. then some nonrepairable or high $ places you need to check out next. we are here to help in any way we can. pics. would help us help you. ... ...
I appreciate all the help I can get. in the upper right corner of the sticker it has 140542 11/70 is the manufacture date. BODY 62A COL L TRIM 1A AXLE (looks like a backwards lower case "c", or the bottom part of an "S") TRNS W DSO 71 The title says the model year is 1970. The car has manual drum brakes with 5-lugs. the engine is a 2-bbl V8. When it's all said and done, it doesn't matter what the car was to begin with, I just like to know what it started it's life as. Does anyone make repo parts for the Mavericks? Cause I'm gonna need to buy lots of stuff! I plan on rebuilding the car from the ground up. Hopefully by the time I'm done, it will look better than new. I plan on replacing the engine, trans, suspension and rear-end, so if anyone is interested, let me know.
Can't break the code, but very nice car to start a build with. Looks a lot like mine did when I first started. I'm tellin ya, these Maverick are coming back. The bonus is the infamous Grabber hood. I was trying to get one while my car was in the process of being painted. I had my guy actually wait a few months on completing the car (spraying it) because I thought I could find a Grabbe hood. They just wanted too much for them. I ended up putting a nice stripe on my stock hood and it really looks nice and makes the car stand out.
Just open the trunk. If it has a drop in gas tank, its a 70. If you have a trunk floor and the tank is mounted under it, its a 71.
I don't know, but the Title is obviously wrong. My Registration says my Maverick is a 2-door "coupe", but all Mavericks are sedans, so it just goes to show that documentation can be inaccurate...
