My son wanted to help today 13 years old and he replaced one front brake line that was in bad shape.. however when he was bleeding the brake lines he let the resivior run dry and got air into the line..is there a way to force the air back through the line to purge the master cylinder instead of running the air all the way through the system?? I seem to rremember some type of hand held pump that threaded onto the brake line??? am I correct???? what is it called????
was he doing it by himself? you and your son just rebleed the brakes..lesson learned. right rear left rear right front left front ......enjoy :bananaman "be happy he wants to help"
No I was with him but I was working on the transmission while he replaced the line..I got him the parts and explained the job (even loosened the fittings shhhhhh) by the time he said he had a problem it was too late...His sister was pumping the petal for him.. Why do I have to bleed the rear brakes aren't they fed from the front resiviour??? there is also a proportioning valve just after the master cylinder.
You need to bleed ALL the brakes. From what I have learned the reservoirs dont run back/front but rather a primary and secondary as a safety feature.
I have been told to leave the reservoir cover off (filled up) over night and some of the air will work its way back out but I dont know how much truth there is to this.
I've blead the brakes on 4 wheelers and such w/ the cover off the top of the master cylinder and just pump it until air comes out... I wouldnt do this on a car however as it will sprew EVERYWHERE... Id suggest bleeding all brakes as your supposed to just for safety issues.
Yes, that works very well. When I am working on my own car......I gravity bleed the brakes by removing the reservoir cover and crack each bleeder. May sure the reservoir does not run dry. If I have a problem with one of the lines....I'll use my trusty vac pump
Never leave the cover off the master cylinder over night. Brake fluid (DOT 3 & 4) is hygroscopic (it draws moisture out of the air, reducing it's boiling point) and it opens the system to contamination.
Ewww that is some great info man I will make sure to remember this stuff. Keep up the hard work bleed them brakes! Haha there is only a few kids out there at 13 who will get off of there ps2's and Xbox 360's and work on cars. Let him learn from his mistake. Nothing to dramatic though.
71gold said how to do the brake bleed and you said it like three posts after. it was pretty funny. but if the guy didnt get it the first time he sure as heck got it the second time around.
