Hello Maverik lovers ,so im a guy that loves chev ,dodge and FORD, i have built street rods of all three . Its been a long time now sence my last street rod ,more than 10 years .I went into a stage were i built heavy duty off road vehicals for awhile . 5 years ago i moved from the city and bought property in the country ,i just finished my own 1200 sq foot shop. Well to make a long story short ,i was drinking at the local pub with the chevy small block race champ and in a drunking state told him that myself and my pops use to build street rods back in the day and that i thought i could build a car and kick his ASS ,him being a chevy man i told him that i would build a ford and beat him at the track.Well two weeks later i bought a 1970 Maverick ,body and interior mint but 6 cylinder blow for 400.00 . My plane is to put front disk brackes and a 351w with some top and bottom end work done to it with aluminun intake ,ported with headers. My question to all you maverick friends is ,what is the cheapest stock rearend i can find with 3:73,3:93 or 4:10 possi with a wheel base that will just bolt in with very little modifying ,im thinking 88 to 92 mustang ,yes or no ,i will send pics of project from start to finish and let you all now how the chevy ass kickin went by this time next year ,rome wasnt built in a day Jimmy2gates
are you doing 1/8 mile drags? how fast do you need to go? how fast does this chevy go and what class does he run in? probably going to need an early mustang or full sized ford 9" rear end. see the post above titled "rear end problems", click on the link of the second post. that gives you all the 9" widths and the years they are used. be advised though that nothings cheap. you'll probably need to purchase the rear end housing, gears, spool, and after market axles. posi rears are rare anymore.
Hello Don Graham, thank you for your responced to my question about a late model 88 to 62 mustang rearend ,the guy i want to race from my local town has a mid 8 second big block chev ,but he also races a street legal mid 12 second 1/4 mile small block chev, this is the car i want to race ,my Maverick i am building ,i hope will compete with his mid 12 second small block .My ariginal goal was to go 351 w ,but im also considering a 302 mexican small block i can purchase fairly cheap. My goal is to find the rite combination of motor small bock, c4 tanny with 3000 stall and a good gear ratio in the rearend .Jimmy2gates
A 306 small block with lots of compression, 456 gears, 28"X9" Slicks, 3800 stall convertor, Calvert Racing Caltracs, the right shock combination, SFC's and roll bar should get you in the ballpark. It's not much more $ to stroke it to 347 if you're going to be buying the rotating assembly. Plus, there's always the "N" word ("Nitrous") - it'll get you where you want to be. Good luck.
Thank you Rick Book Thanks for the advice Rick ,one more question for you ,can you tell me what is need for builld a 347 stroker ?. What size crank, cam ,connecting rods ,pistons, lifters, rockers . One last question ,what about using 351w heads on a 302, thanks Jimmy2gates
you can buy the 347 as a kit. comes with all the parts. try coast performance, or go to ebay and type in 347 and there will be a whole slew of them. i'm running the d0 351w heads on mine right now as i hurt my other motor. but i usually run a 302, +.040=308, with a comp cam(hydraulic) .544 lift, probe pistons, eagle rods, edelbrock aluminumh heads, crane roller rockers, holley 750HP carb, performer intake, hooker headers. c4. 4.33 rear gears, 33 spline axles, full spool and M/T drag radials on weld wheels. also an electric fan and moroso water pump motor. a lot of stuff stripped out fuel cell and battery in rear. best et so far has been 11.81 with 40 pounds of extra weight in the trunk. p.s. the d0 or c9 heads are the best stock 351w heads, but for all the work needed to really make them flow you can probably find a set of aluminum heads.
Hello Maverick friends, well i officially made up my mind and just purchased a 1968 302 mexican smallblock complete with 4 barrell intake and cater 625 comp carbirator ,real good compression and runs like a top for 500.00 .cnd. I also put in my order today from a local parts compamy my father has been dealing with for 15 years on a 347 stroker kit ,crank,1.4 rods,11.8:1 pistons,.30 over rings and all the bearings ,the deal i was givin through my fathers account 1025.00 plus tax . I THINK NOT A BAD DEAL . My chevy small block buddy i beleive is shaking in his boots ,i cant wait till i have enough postings to start showing you guys pics . For now this CANADIAN thanks all my new American friends across the line ,special thanks to Don Grahan and Rick Book ,cheers guys Jimmy2gates
Hello again folks ,forgot to say that do to all the valuable info from this site ive realized my 1970 2 door Maverick is actually a 1969.5 as the igniton is in the dash not the steering . cheers Jimmy2gates
well guys ,its JIMMY2GATES AGAIN ,i just talked with my good friend Dave the machinest, hes retired now ,he use to build jet airplanes back in the day. Dave is telling me that he could fabiricate a cummins inline 6 cyl turbo to my 302 small block for about 1300 bucks and give me 200 hp or more just from the turbo ,has anybody out there done this? and how did it work,he claims that he could install this turbo and i could still drive the car on the street ,he also claims that when the turbo kicked in it would put me in the back seat there will be so much power,so now the question is ,302 with turbo or stroker 347 . Dave claims that for him to turbo my Maverick would be about the same cost as putting in a stoker kit .I want some feed back from you all . cheers Jimmy2gates
Hello again ,Maverick friends . I have a few questions that need answers. I started stripping my 302 i bought and did find in the block casting under the intake manifold ,MADE IN MEXICO. All the castings say its a 69 block and heads.I have two questions, what compression pistons would a 69 302 have come with ? and on the heads in the casting it says 302 69 DOOE , What size intake and exhaust valves would be in these heads? Any answers , cheers Jimmy2gates
if it says hecho in mexico on the block, that is the most desirable stock type block available. these will withstand higher hp than the regular blocks. don't know about the compression, but you can bet it wasn't that high. you are going to have to change them out anyway as the stock ones were cast. if nobody else answers in a while i'll go to the garage and get my books.
Hello again Maverick friends ,a few more questions .What vehicle would be best to find a good used RAD for my maverick ,i would prefer something better than a stock 302 maverick Rad.Something in the same length and width but maybe a extra core for more cooling ,or something a few inches longer as i can move the mounts , has to be for a automatic. also would like a opinion on a good stock electronic ignition distributor for a 69 block 302 ,i think i would need a simple wiring ,any help ,cheers Jimmy2gates ps ,im looking for the rad cuz my car is a 69.5 and was a small 6 cyl thanks .
i just bought an aluminum rad made by northern. made some brackets for it. as for the automatic i put a tranny cooler on it. my distributor is the msd billet with the msd 6al ignition and a blaster ss coil.
