rear end problems

I purchased a 79 granada today sight un seen( smart huh?). Well the story goes like this IT is an inline six, with a rear end that by all acounts is not an 8in it looks like a chevy. I also dont know how many lugs, It has hubcaps on it and the guy wouldnt pull one of them off to see. Im braced for the bad news so some one any one go ahead and tell me that ive bought the only one of these cars that wont interchange wit my little maverick.

No It Is Not A 8 Inch I Had One Of Those And Some Old Guy Wanted It For His Street Rod He Gave Me $100.00 For It I Thanked Him And Helped Him Load It In His Truck

 

It seems to be an 8.8 I dont know how it got under there but thats what it looks like

 

Ok it seems that I could find the only useless pice of junk in the state to buy. the rearend is a 8.7 . I guess it could be worse I did get five lug front end and disk brakes, also a full sized c4. you guys are a lot of help. A great reference material. Thanks for your help. FRED

 

If you have 4 lugs and just want 5 lugs out back, then it wouldn't hurt anything to use that rear.
Beyond a situation like that though, it is pretty useless.

How do you measure the rear end to see if ya have a 9 in. 8.8, etc....?

 

It's a little more involved than measuring.

It's a process of elimination and knowing what rears were offered in the car in question. Goes something like this:
Does it have a removeable rear cover, or not?

If yes, then: What rears were available in that model/year with removeable cover?
There were several made for almost all Ford models/years...

If no, then: What rears were available in that model/year with a chunk.
If there is a question of 8" or 9", then can all of the chunk bolts be accessed with a socket?

If yes, then: It's an 8" If no, then: It's a 9"...

 

What do you mean by can all of the chunk bolts be accessed with a socket? I haven't looked at the rear in awhile, are you meaning by not being able to access the chunk bolts, meaning you can't turn the chunk bolts or?

 

If you can physically put a socket/ratchet on every nut that holds the chunk to the housing, then you have an 8" rear.
If there are nuts that you cannot put a ratchet on, meaning they need to be turned with a wrench, then it is a 9".

 

I'll try and send ya a picture, are you up still? it has virtually all nuts that through out the entire chunk.... damn I feel so dumb that I can't understand!
