I'm shopping for a new carb for my 302. Who has what and why? I want to use the stock air cleaner so does anyone know of any problems??
Todd used a holley on his. plopped it into place brought up the idle a bit. been runnin fine ever since. (except when he ran without a fuel filter for a while. clogged it right up.)
Ok Dave this can be a 3 page debate, but to start off i would use a Holley.Just for it's adjustibility and excellent fuel milelage capibility. Many have had trouble with them but i can argue right back with the trouble i've had with edelbrocks. My 79 f150 4x4 has had a 600 holley that i put on 9 years ago and i never had to do anything more than set up the air fuel mixture screws about once a year at the most and my comet has a 650 holley on it and i can get 28 mpg out of it fairly trouble free.Anyway thats my 2 cents.BTW where about in London are you? Iam leaving to go to Stratfford tonight for 2 days and wil have lots of free time tomorrow afternoon if your not that far from there.
Oh boy, not this old chestnut again . I think both a equally reliable. Both have there good and bad points in my book. Holleys got a bad rap early on as not being very user friendly. Any junk gets in the neddle and seat and you have a gas fountain. One back fire and your power valve was gone. Holley has addressed this issue with a simple fix...a check ball and spring. Just keep the fuel clean and you wont have a problem. I like holleys personally. Tuning is a snap, usually just main jets, maybe a power valve, shooter or accelator pump cam. There are alot of good books out there on this subject, I would reccomend reading up. Edelbrock/carter afb. Slightly different jet set up. Very similar to the quadrajet carb or thermoquad. They use metering rods and jets. In some case you can get away with just changing jets, but for anything drastic you will need to change the rods as well. They are little better if you get a little junk in the gas. You might get lucky and bolt one or the other on and go. But remember, they are universal and usually require some tweeking. All in all, if you read up on the subject you will find that both a pretty darn good. It has been said that you will make more power with a holley, I agree. But if you are just building a mild street car, then go with the edelbrock design. Both styles have been around forever. Good luck Dave
Everybody at my works seems to argue over this subject, but I'm suprised that most went with holley. I tend to like the Holley myself. Same as Don though.
i go holley 600 with a holley street dominator intake works exelent with a 1" spacer.makes more torq too!
If I had a dollar for every time this question gets asked here..... Anyway, I have a Holley Street Avenger, and it runs excellent. I have always run Holleys on my Maverick, but Edelbrocks are good too...
who da thunked it the RADMAV saying that a simple 600cfm 4100 to do the trick i think a couple of split dominators right around 1250cfm each should be nice for a daily driver
I run edelbrock on street cars, and holleys on anything that just goes down the straight line. ive never had any luck with holley's on the street so i run edelbrocks on my daily drivers.... it's all a matter of personal opinion
Oh boy, this is one of those arguements that always gets out of hand. Instead of banning politics, they should have banned Holley vs Edelbrock discussions! I am diehard Holley. My Sprint has an 1850 and I run the stock air cleaner. Can't even tell it's there. And like any well tuned Holley, it runs spectacular. For me, Holley is the 'set it and forget it carb'. Folks that have issues with them don't do it right the first time. That said, If the 600 vacuum 1850 Holley hadn't been given to me (in a bazillion pieces), I would have bought the 570 Avenger w/electric choke. It has everything on it that I like in a Holley for ease of tuning. My .02 Dave
