Check out the exhaust system on Rick Book's Maverick (formerly owned by Dan Hines)...

Rick's car has a dual outlet Flowmaster 40. IMO, that muffler needs a header to have the very best sound on the I6.

Why is that? Does a header add more bass sound?...

I think so. Here's the deal, when Dan owned the car and put the Flowmaster 40 on it, a few of us in the Georgia crowd thought it sounded "like an elephant farting." My '77 has a 250 I6 with a header and a 252 Comp Cam. I'll be putting a larger, longer muffler on it. I'm not sure which one, yet.

You have asked a question that I have been trying to answer for myself. No matter what muffler you, it is not going to sound like a V-8. It just ain't gonna happen. I've gone to the muffler sites - Flowmaster, Dynomax, Magnaflow, Borla, Bassani, Hooker, all of 'em - and listened to their sound clips. The sites that allow you to listen to a Jeep with I6 (Dynamax, Magnaflow) will give you the closest idea as to what our Mavs with an I6 will sound like. I do tolerate the sound of the muffler on the Jeep on the Dynomax site. I'm leaning toward a long muffler that would be a mellow tone on V-8. The more quiet and mellow the sound is, the less likely anybody will hear that elephant break wind.

One more idea (I so ashamed). Find a ricer with a sound you like and find out what muffler it has. :coco:
