Well you get the idea. The weather is starting to come around so i decided to try and get some stuff done on the car.Last year it started to act up a bit almost like the ignition was breaking down at high rpms 5000-6000.I had the car out a few weeks ago and now it's doing it at 2000 rpm and just gets worse if you get into it more.So this is what i did so far, changed ign module, coil, put a carter race pump on,new fuel lines, rebuilt 650 holley[had a 600] new plug wires checked timing 30 deg total, tonight i pulled the distributor put in another pick up coil cleaned and lubed everything put it back in and it still does the same thing. The only thing i haven't changed is the plugs[they are only a year old] but i guess i could have a bad one,I'll do that tomorrow.Any more ideas guys??
    Thanks Derek.

You pretty much took care of most of the usual things to check...but I would change the Dist cap and rotor(first thing I would do..use a good cap & rotor, eh!)..I had a cap that looked perfect..but caused much the same as what you are experiancing. I replaced it and fixed the problem..then a few years later I found this"perfect cap" and put it back on(not remembering why I took it off before) and had a missfire again(I threw it out this time). I would change the plugs for sure(they are cheap..I prefer Autolites or Accel) make sure to use dielectric grease on all elec connections(cap & plugs). 30 degrees timing sounds a tad low...I find 34-36 works great(just an opinion of course) What is your initial? ..check to make sure your vacuum advance is working properly and make sure you have a clean fuel filter. Hope this helps you out a little...some others will probably have better advice than I can give....

'Sounds like you did everything except change the plugs and fuel filter.

Backfiring through the carb usually indicates it is starving for fuel (provided the timing is set correctly).

Hmmm.. how old is the gas? Would you need to put a stabelizer in it, maybe? I hear it can get pretty cold above Dallas, TX. ;)

Good luck and keep us posted.

    Pepto-Bismo? :rofl2:

I agree with grabber71, change the dizzy cap and rotor. Sounds like resistance building up inside the cap, gets worse with age.

if the ceramic is cracked on a plug it will do that..

late at night.. start the car.. keep the lights off, and all lights around the car.. open the hood and look in the engine bay... if you see blue arching.. you have a spark plug issue or a wire issue..

Ok so i just crawled my lazy but out of bed.So to clear up a few things, yes the fuel filter was changed as was the gas tank last week,i took the cap, rotor and wires off of my daily driver that runs fine and tried them on the Comet. But no the coil wasn't new it was one i had in the garage,i just thought it woulden't be likely to have two coils do the same thing. But i will put a new one on when i change the plugs today.Oh and it is poping through the exhaust. At first i was thinking broken valve spring but i woulden't do it all the time last year when all this started.
    Thanks Derek.

Well cleaver nailed it,it was the coil.It was arcing out from the tower to the + tereminal.I shut off all the lights in the garage today and got looking around BINGO i saw the arc.I changed the plugs this afternoon anyway for good measure. Now if i could only get rid off the flat spot in the carb at part throttle i'll be all set.
    Derek.
