What will smaller tires do for me in numbers?

the smaller tires will get you up to speed faster, but you lose top speed.

you should go find a 1/4 track and run it once.. i bet those gears open up better for you on a longer track

Shorter tires don`t ALWAYs reduce your top end "trap" speed.
    example #1

My car ran 12.45 @109 with 28 inch slicks (4.11 gears) The car needed more gear because it likes to rev due to the Victor jr, heads and Tunnel ram.

All I did was bolt on 26" slicks and ran 12.20 at 112.3 :)

Lets just say the shorter tires allowed my engine to climb into its "happy" zone quicker in each gear.

    example #2

My sons 87 Mustang LX (3.90 gears) ...

    with the 28" slick ran 14.10 @ 97 mph ...

bolted on the 26" slicks and ran 13.89 @ 100 mph.

That will happen if you don't have enough stall in the converter, too little rear gear, too much weight....or a combination of things. This is where you get into separating a "street" car from a 'race' car. Is it possible to have both? Maybe...depends on how much you're willing to put up with!

Back to the topic....going to shorter tires will reduce the amount of contact with the pavement. It won't be much, but it does make a difference. Assuming you have some traction, it might help you a little by keeping the RPM up in the meat of the power curve, BUT if you don't have any traction, your ETs are going to suffer. I've seen cars go to lower gears and PICK UP mph and ET, just because the RPM is now up in the curve where it was struggling to get into the curve before, then fell out of that curve upon shifting. Then again, I've seen cars go to larger tires and/or higher gears and pick up ET and MPH...AND I've seen going to shorter tires & losing ET so it's all a crap shoot. Trial and error will be the only way to know for sure if it works on yours.
