All you have to do is weld a cross piece to item 2 so it is across the opening. Maybe a piece if 1/2" square tubing would do. Drill a hole in it and then attach with the wing nut. The scoop itself could then be bolted at the corners to item 2 by welding studs in the corners, in the scoop, and then using nuts under the plate to attach it.
Yeah, I drew something like that up last night. I'm modeling something now before I go ahead and get to cutting, I don't have a big budget to mess up with. I'll keep you guys updated.
I've got a design for you. I will post it in just a few minutes soon as I finish it up. Should solve a couple of your problems and still be easy to build and shouldnt cost more than $150 max.
Hey -- I made the thing in paint. I'll be getting a plastic or fiberglass one to work with. Although, I need a few different vendors to look at. JC Whitney and Summit don't have too much.
Well you said you were having some problems about mounting the thing. I just had an idea for an easier and cleaner design...but no worries I'll just keep it to myself. Go with fiberglass its easier to fix if you screw up.

I've been thinking about one for mine, I have a piece of maverick hoo I was going to use as a scoop, then I thought SHAKER, now you have me thinking, but I'll probably just go to CJ pony and get the repop cobrajet scoop for 500 down the road
Being that the 250 I6 has an off-center carburetor you'll have to consider either: 1) how to center it 2) how to make it look good when off-center.
Centering it shouldn't be a big problem. It's only off by a couple inches. I may just need a wider scoop.
I was wondering...but no problem. That was my bad. This should solve the problem of being able to take the assembly off the carb easier. If you can work with fiberglass making the base would be easy. The base needs a recessed flange. Other than making the base and drilling a hole in a piece of flat aluminum and bending some tabs over, thats all the fabrication you would have to do for this design. #1 Scoop #2 Scoop base #3 Silicone Tubing #4 Wing nut #5 Flat bar stock (alum or steel) #6 Sleeve #7 T-style clamp You need to find a piece of pipe like exhaust tubing thats fit the top of the carb. Then cut some slits as shown in pic #6. And bend them over (this is your sleeve). That serves as shelf for the flat aluminum piece #5 to rest on. Drill a hole in that for the carb stud to come through and tighten down the whole deal with a wing nut #4. You will have to find a piece of Silicone tubing (like the type used on turbo piping) that will fit over the sleeve you place on the carb. They make reducers and such so your flange on the scoop base can be bigger. I would recommend finding the piece that fits the sleeve then you can make the base to fit the other end on the Silicone tubing. Assemble your scoop base, air filter, and scoop with screws. Then slide the tubing over the flange. And tighten with a T style clamp, repeat for the bottom. You might be able to epoxy the silicone to the top flange then all you have is the one clamp at the bottom around the sleeve. Reason I would use the T-style clamp is they are stronger and better looking. You could hide the screw toward the back. Then all you have to do to remove the assembly is loosen one clamp! Air filter changes just take out the 6 screws after removing the assembly. Since you said you dont have a shop I thought this would be the best way since everything but the base you can buy and everything can be made with hand tools.
Or make the base wider and slide the scoop over to line up on the hood. Your intake hole may be closer to one side but that shouldnt be a problem. If you wanted to run some weather stripping around the base to seal against the hood and extra inch or 2 would be that noticeable anyway.
Looks good. For some reason I never thought of a t-style clamp. I'm still contemplating a lot of things, the biggest of which being centering the thing and keeping it fully-functional. Thanks big-time for the idea.
