you could have any of the following problems

    1. your spark plugs are not gapped correctly
    2. your carb floats are not set correctly
    3. you have the wrong metering rods in
    4. you have the wrong fuel jets in
    5. the choke is not working correctly

    start there

the edelbrock fuel chart, for jets and rod sizes is what i would start with for getting the rods and jets figured out. if they have been changed, go back to stock settings, if you arent sure if they were changed, pull the rods out, and look on the side of the rods and it will have stamped numbers on it. somthing like 7042.. which means its a .070 x .042 rod...

i am looking for the chart online, edelbrock.com is the best place to find it, but it appears that their website is down at the moment. i am looking on my hard drive for it, and when i find it i will put it on my photobucket.com account and you will be able to download it and print it out

i found the sheet.. but it is for a 1405 carb... 600 cfm and wont work for a 650 carb..

it could be that you have dirty fuel lines or maybe a bad fuel filter.. could be any number of things really.. and its just trial and error.

you could try some fuel injector cleaner for starters

sounds like the choke is sticking. next time the motor is fully warmed up and you have the symtoms you stated remove the air cleaner and look to see if the choke is all the way open. if it is not you may have some build up on the choke asemboly, keeping it from moving freely.

grrr still running rich i remeber a month ago the power to the electric choke failed for some reason driving along the carb popped we redid wire to choke and its working fine now .. think maybe the pop hurt something inside the carb?

I hate these problems. There are just too many variables to mess with. Then, just when you get it all hammered out, they swap to summer or winter gas mixture and you have to start all over.

Is it running rich all the time, or just at idle, or just at accelleration/high speed?

I have cross-wired mine many times, backfired, and melted air cleaners, and still works just fine. I think you need to start with leaning out the idle rich screws, then work on metering jet/rod combos to lean it out.

As for the gas smell...these cars (most of them) have no catalytic converter, so you will always get a bit of a gassy smell (I suppose someone can tune it to the point where it is getting near-perfect burn and very little smell...I am not that someone!).

But, for starters, I would hit the idle mixture screws in the front. Tighten them until the rpms start to drop, then back out so it increases 200rpm, then do the other side the same way.

Then make sure all cylinders are firing and you aren't blowing one or two cylinders of unburned fuel out the back. Maybe do this first...

Then buy the metering kit that comes with the rods and jets, and put in a leaner set of rods until it gets better, hopefully without having to swap jets which are a little harder to mess with.

I Have the instruction manual, so PM me with the model number and I will email scanned copies to you.

No, no, no!!! Keep the edelbrock. In my opinion (that is mine and Simon's vs the other 1200 guys on this forum:huh: )The E-brock is very easy to tune, just need the metering kit ($40) and the patience.....
