I have a 77' maverick that i just bought and i noticed that there is some play in the steering. I havent driven any older cars before so im not used to it but there still seems to be too much play. I have heard that there is a wrench that you can use to adjust the steering tighter, also the same happened to a friends 75' ford pickup and he had to replace the steering box. Any ideas on how to get rid of some of that play?? thanks

there are a few things you can do :yup: .

1-there is an adj. screw on top of the box. loosen the jam nut and take a flat head screwdriver and run the adj. in to snug..
    2-pack the box with grease.
3 -put a grease fitting in the top plate as some of us have done and you can fill the box tight.
4-check to make sure all the ball joints are tight.(including the idler arm).

Thanks alot frank, i just got it yesterday and im really excited to start making this car my own, im ony 17 and owned a 76' pinto as my first car, then went to a 90' chrysler newyorker, so after driving that for a year and a half i decided its time for me to get something old to drive (i didnt get the chance to drive the pinto). I'm sure ill be posting more questions on here about how to get more horses out of the 250 cu.i. straight 6.
