Hello I have a 302 with around 345 horse power, 2500 stall, a c-4 transmission and a 4.11 gear. do I have to change my cam if I change to 4 speed manual transmission? how will my 4-speed (top loaded) work with the 4.11 gear and cam. Please advise, Thanks. (high compresion, aluminum heads, etc...)
Well, you don't mention intended use for the car or cam specs but usually a manual trans car is more tolerant of a low vacuum cam. With the 4.11 gears you may want to consider an overdrive trans if you drive on the street. At highway speeds you'll be taching over 3500 rpm depending on the diameter of the rear tires.
I whant my car for the street and drag that's why I'm running a 4.11 gear. I have 245/40/17 front and 275/40/17 back. I know I should be running like a 3.55 with this tires but I will also buy some 15x8 with big tires so that 4.11 gear can do it's work. I'm just wondering if I'm on the friway doing like 60 ml. and if I drop a gear or two with the 4 speed, will it go fast or is the 4.11 to much? I just hear storis of how bad this 4.11 is on the street but if they say that because of the gas, I really don't care. (Go Fast is what I want) I don't know how big of a difference is it going to be from a c-4 and top loaded. Of course a manual transmission is great for takeoffs. Please advise.
you say you want the car for street and drag. is that drag racing at the track or on the street. not to get into a discussion on street racing but just to let you know if you are going to the track for something like bracket racing the object is to be consistent and the c-4 is more consistent. there are classes for the 4 speed but usually in heads up competition. 4'11's probably won't be too bad around ton but you don't want to do too much highway driving. not for the gas but for the wear and tear on the motor.
Same here...my 4:30s don't like the highway but my toploader does seem to help although it's probably just in my head.
Thank you guys! I had the wrong consept about the 4.11. But I get it now. Maybe I will run a 3.55 latter. Not sure yet. I will only drive it for weekends and I will go to the drag maybe once a month and that's if I go. I will keep it for now and see how it works. Thanks again for the help.
Unless your engine can turn 6500+ RPM, you may redline it before you get to the finish line with the tire and gear combo. I ran 4:56 gears with 29inch tall slicks and shifted at 5500 rpm and was at almost redline with that. Ran a best of 12:52 at 107mph.
