Well I picked up my 302 and C4 last week for my 70 Grabber conversion. Engine ended up not being too good. So I went back today and scored a 5.0 HO out of a 86 Mark VII plus a good AOD all for a Ben Franklin but I had to pull it. I was wondering if anyone has used the oringinal factory headers and if they worked. I understand that I will have to change the oil pan and water pump and timing cover. I have read about the AOD swap in the trans section. One thing I was wondering, how do you control the overdrive shift. Is it electric or cable? Any help or ideas will be appreciated. Kevin
new toy Overdrive is controled by the TV cable/rod location, speed and load on the trans. The TV cable is the big issue here and controls just about everything. That's why it's the most critical of all adjustments, but not difficult.
Lokar sells the Throttle and Transmission cables. http://www.lokar.com/interior_pages/tc_kd.htm You will need to modify the transmission tunnel to fit an AOD in a 69 1/2 - 70 Maverick.
Idaho, I have a 88 5.0 in my 69.5, everything is from a t-bird. Before I took the engine out of the ol bird, I had ran the cable unhooked from the throttle,, I had pulled the cable just a little at a time, tied it back in place with a wire tie, or a bread sack wire. Anyways, once I got it to where it shifted while in drive by its self, it was a reliable deal,,,,,, it shifted from low to 2nd at 25mph, 2nd to third at 40, and into overdrive at 55 everytime. There is a different way to shift it when its like this when you want to shift the gears manually when your racing, basicly, from when you shift from low to 2nd, you drop it back into low and it will shift into 2nd, and then you shift it into drive when ever you wanted to grab 3rd. Shift it up into overdrive when you want,,, 60 65, it will kick in when ever you put it into OD. But just everyday driving,, it was just like I described, reliable like clockwork. It also shifted like it had a shift kit in it,, That cable sets line pressure in the transmission,, shift feel, shifting rpms, and can burn up a AOD faster than greased lightning if your trying to hot rod one. Manually set that cable, and learn to operate it, and you will like it. I cant use my AOD in my 69.5,, tranny tunnel is too skinny,, otherwise it would have it. I say, it may be a simpler fix than that. JMHO,, Chad
Thanks everyone for all the good answers. How bad do the headers hit the tower and could this be fixed with a little or a large modificaton? About the trans tunnel, mine was a late build in May of '70. When did they change to the larger hump? What if you can doto modify it? If I decide to use the C4 instead of the AOD what would I have to change? Sorry for all of the questions but I have found its easier to ask than to do it twice. Thanks
