Hello I am 18 I have just started my commet project. Its a 66 and it has a blown 289. I, being pretty cheep, bought a trashed ford fairlane with a 289 that was running strong, I then rebuilt the fairlane 289 with some goodies (hopeing for 200 rear wheel HP). And while I was at it I had the commet transmission rebuilt at a shop (all OE parts), this all set me back about 2200 dollars, so now the problem... I put the 289 against the commet trans mission and it dose not bolt up.

what can I do? I have the transmission from the fairlane but it has a dash shifter, and the commet has the floor, is it hard to convert the dash shifter to the floor style. both trannys are automatic.

I believe it was around 67 when Ford changed from a 5 bolt bellhousing to a 6 bolt. If the trans case is all on piece, about all you can do is have the parts switched to the transmission you need. If the bell part of the case is removable (I'm not an automatic guy so I dont know for sure) then you should be able to swap it out. I know a long time ago we used to pull transmissions without pulling the bell part. Or you could just get a 302 and put your new transmission on it.

Lets start with, is the Tranny out of the fairlane A C4 or a FMX? I think that the fairlane did not come with the C4. If the are both C4 tranny's the only thing that you will need to change from the colum shift fairlane C4 to the floor shifter comet C4 is the manual valve lever. Sounds harder than it really is.

I have a Maverick in pretty good Shape for free.

    Hi everyone,

I have a Maverick `75 that I can't keep anymore. If anyone is interested send me an e-mail. I should also say that it is not running. It will need a rebuild of both the transmission and the engine. The body is in perfect shape.

Mid year 65 is when the blocks and bells changed from 5-bolt to 6-bolt.

your working on a '66 comet? this forum is set up for the '71-'77 generation so you might have some trouble finding the best answers, but we're still happy to help :) as everyone else has said, you'll need a 5 bolt bell housing. i hear they are pretty hard to find. im sure there is an adaptor plate on the market if worse comes to worse and maybe an aftermarked shifter to solve your linkage problem.

1964 was the last year for the 5 bolt bell housings. Some of them blead over into the 64 1/2 mustangs but that is all. All 1965 small blocks were 6 bolt.

wow good thing I subseribed to this topic when I posted it years ago, but huh yeah its all fixed now I simply rebuilt the fairlane tranny and converted it to a floor shifter very simple to do... car runs great but is hidden away in a barn in CA were it can evade rust for a few more years untill I am on my feet and can restore it the way it should be done.
