I need a new gear for my Mav's top loader. The local Ford wrecking yard told me toploader speedo gears are reverse of the others. Anybody know if that is so. I have 325 gears and plan to run 1521570 tires if they fit on the back.

I have the same 3.25:1 gears in the back of mine ... I replaced both the driven and drive gear ... but don't remember what I used .... This site has good info on how to figure it out ..

You will need to find out the color of the drive gear on your output shaft ..

I probably need both. I just bought a junker cable because the old speedo cable that came off my 3 speed was a couple inches short. I don't have the new cable in hand, it's down at my boddy's shop. It's got a plastic worm type gear on the end that fits in the tranny. The old cable on my 3 speed was more than 10 miles to slow so I want to dial that in with the new tranny and 325's and 15" tires. The fellow at the weacking yard thinks the toploader uses a reverse drive on the end the the cable. He can find one if I can figure out what it is I need.??? I'll check the toploader site out for some info and let you know what I find.

Since it mounts on the opposite side of the tranny than a 3-speed or C4 .. it is reverse ...

Went to DKTT's website and found that I need a 7 tooth drive gear but it looks like I have choises of a 16 thru 21 tooth driven gear. I'll call them tomorrow.

They did have a reverse gear avaiable in DKTT's that ingages the reverse gear??? Checking your speed in reverse? The port is on the other side.

I figured it for you .... you need a 7 tooth drive gear ... if you go with an 18 driven .. it will register a little slow ... if you go with a 17 it will register a little fast ... if they made a 17.6 driven ... you'd be right on .... :)

I have P215/70R14 on my car ... have a 3.25 rear and am running a 7 drive and 18 driven as well ... my car should be registering a little fast ...

FYI ... Revolution Per Mile Chart ....

If you can't tell, my knowledge on this subject is very limited. How do you remove the drive gear from the tranny. Don't tell me I have to takethe tranny back out! Tire size revs. The local tire shop?

You don't have to remove the tranny .. but you do have to remove the rear housing to get to the output shaft ...

Does it currently have a gear installed? Why do you think you need one? Is it stripped? When I bought my toploader the gear had been removed ... I have no idea why. When I got my car all together I couldn't figure out why the speedo didn't work. Found out there was no drive gear.

I had to remove the shifter and linkage and driveshaft and pull the rear housing off. Factory uses a lock ring and small ball bearing type of device to hold the gear in place on the output shaft. I bought several size lock rings until I found one that would work. For the ball bearing ... I ended using a split-shot fishing sinker. It's been holding up for more than 2 years ...

I 'm hoping there is a gear in there. I'm going to check in the morning. I was under the impression I would have to change it but it looks like I'll just have to id it and match the color with a 17 tooth driven gear.

I dont know why you would need to change the drive gear in the trans. It dosent matter what side of the trans the cable comes out, the cable will be spinning in the same direction. You should only have to change the gear on the speedometer cable. I have a toploader with 3:89 gears and by doing the math in a Mustang & Ford Magazine article, went straight to the local Ford dealer and bought the correct gear that goes on the cable.
